Sad news about layoffs in Copenhagen

Thanks for posting. I also just saw this via another ballet web site - so sad, for those involved, and also for the new crop of graduates looking for jobs. Not only is it that there will no openings there, but this is a substantial number of top rank, experienced dancers who will be looking for jobs for next season.

Yes, and better trained than there ever used to be, apparently, as the schools have multiplied. I guess that's another topic for another forum.

Thanks for posting this. We know a number of dancers there so it will be interesting to see how they are impacted. Unfortunately they aren't the only ones hurting this year - there are some smaller companies struggling, too, with decisions for 2012-13 pending. Once definite plans are made - and official announcements made - I'll post the information.

On top of dancers already retiring, there were seven cuts made at RDB. Mostly older dancers who were no longer dancing as much. So the younger and newer dancers appear safe for now. But these dancers can not be replaced next year so the number of dancers in the company will be smaller in the future.

I wonder what this will mean for apprentices and those coming up through the school.

This is well-written blog from a US-born corps member at RDB that may be of interest .....and it's somewhat thread-related because she talks eloquently in her 12/27 entry about the cuts at RDB and what it takes to be a dancer.

She writes so well. And her video has been all around. :) Glad to have met its maker more now! What a lovely tribute to this company and an important reminder of what the road ahead can really be like for a dancer.
