mjl27, congratulations to your daughter and thanks for posting. DD, 16, is a tall dancer too at just under 5'9". I hope this isn't out of line, but out of curiosity, would you mind sharing your DD's height? The more information we can gather on height the better from what we've learned thus far in the ballet world (at least in the US).

My DD is 5'8", so similar in height to your daughter. Some companies definitely have preferences concerning the height of their dancers, so it is a good idea to research as much as possible. Some companies state height restrictions when announcing their auditions, while others do not. And if a new Artistic Director takes over a company they may have different preferences than their predecessor. DD just did as much research as possible on the various companies and attended as many auditions as she could. She has learned to not take it personally when she is cut due to her height since it is not something she can change. DD also learned to "network" with other tall dancers to hear about their experiences auditioning for various companies. At her current company - the AD was enthusiastic about her "long lines" at her audition and invited her to stay and join a rehearsal with the company. It definitely made her feel good about working there - But it took MANY auditions before she found such an opportunity!

Was this contract offered at a competition or because of competition attendance? No

We are a little late in sharing, but still thrilled! DD attended company class late last fall to audition at the encouragment of a teacher. All company contracts had already been offered and accepted, but the AD got the approval to add one more position and DD was able to start in time to be part of Nutcracker. She is so very happy and excited to be dancing full time! BT4D has been such a blessing in this journey!
