Adult Summer Intensives- a list

79 posts in this topic

I just located information about Dance Master Classes in Italy and Spain for adults. There are programs from 1 to 5 weeks in Urbania, Italy, and from 1 to 2 weeks in Seville, Spain. The longer programs in Italy may include a performance at the end.

I was unable to copy or attach the announcement. Further information may be obtained from Angela DeMello as follows: ademello@dancemasterclass.com

While I may be able to arrange a long vacation from work, I am not going to attempt to arrange that for the coming year.

Other adults may benefit from these options.

Hi, I was looking at the site of the English National Ballet to learn about day-long intensives for adults.

I am unable to attend the currently scheduled programs. However, I would like to attend future programs. Other adults may benefit from going to the website to check for similar programs. I have joined the mailing list. I copied key information as follows:

Ballet Intensive: Modern Masters 29 Mar 2015

Markova House, London

29 Mar 2015

10:00 – 16:00

Members: £40 / Non-Members: £50

Synopsis

Ballet Intensives provide the opportunity for adult dancers to hone their dance skills in an inspiring day of dance workshops. Warming up with a BalletFit session, followed by a ballet class focusing on the core technical elements of flexibility, strength and alignment, the day builds towards learning extracts from Modern Masters, the triple bill being performed at Sadler's Wells, featuring works by renowned choreoraphers Jiri Kylian, John Neumier and William Forsythe. The day ends with an informal sharing, friends and families and invited to watch.

Thanks for this information, Colas. I've attended a few of the ENB days and they are really interesting & fun. Doing class on the circular stage of the Albert Hall -- with chainés & piqué turns around in a circle -- was a highlight. That same day we watched an ENB class, with Tamaro Rojo, and Maina Gielgud (former Australian Ballet AD, and advisor to the ENB on their Swan Lake in the round).

Sometimes the level of the participants in these classes and workshops is variable, but one can always learn, even from a basic beginners' class that's a "taster" or introduction to ballet for adults.

There are several one-day and shorter workshops run by various teachers in London often via the major commercial drop-in studios such as Danceworks, Pineapple, and Central School of Ballet. It's worth checking the websites and the teachers' websites to keep up to date.

If anyone has any experience of these shorter workshops, we'd love to hear it!

Hi,

Maryland Youth Ballet, 926 Ellsworth Drive, Silver Spring, Maryland 20910, telephone (301) 608-2232, will offer an Adult Weekend Intensive, with Mary Henley as the choreographer, on June 12 to 14, 2015. The studio is near the Silver Spring Station of the Washington, DC, Metro. I plan to attend. I have benefited from prior intensives.

Typically there is a ballet class, followed by a classical variation class with separate variations for men and women, followed by a group repertory class choreographed by the guest teacher. On Sunday there is a showing of the variations and the group pieces.

Dance Teq in Toronto, Canada, will offer an adult intensive as follows:

Times: daytimes (between approximately 9am – 4 or 5pm)

I myself have a commitment during that week so I cannot attend this year.

I have taken several classes at Dance Teq when traveling in Toronto. They have been excellent.

Thanks, cantdance. Both of those intensives look wonderful. It's great that more & more studios are realising the desire for serious study by adults. It's odd isn't it -- we wouldn't blink aneye about "amateur" equestrian sports for adults, or tennis, or golf (with the coaching & the competitions). But somehow, ballet for adults is often seen as a bit odd.

Dance Teq is now running two camps in Toronto this summer: one beginner-elementary, and one intermediate. They're in different weeks.

There's more info here: http://danceteq.com/summer-intensives/

(also posting here because I couldn't distinguish the purposes of the two threads)

Lexington Ballet Adult Intensive. http://www.lexingtonballet.org/school_adult.html

^^I can vouch for this program. I attended last year and found it both enjoyable and really helpful. The instructors were company dancers and really generally great people.

Conditioning class was fantastic, technique class was very focused and effective, but I think the highlight for me was the opportunity to learn and perform variations. The ladies learned portions of the "Kingdom of the Shades" from La Bayadere; the two of us in the men's class learned the act I male peasant pas (reset for two dancers) and Albrecht's variation (in its usual solo form) from Giselle.

Dates for this year aren't posted yet, but I'll definitely be going back unless the dates overlap with another intensive I'm already committed to.

In the modern department, Mam-Luft & Co in Cincinnati also offers one heck of a good intensive (http://mamluftcodance.org/intensive/). Went to that one last year, too; the ballet class alone would've been worth the cost and time commitment, but the whole thing was fantastic. 6-8 hours per day of dancing, daily masterclass with amazing dancers and teachers from around the country, options for rep or composition (I took rep; it was awesome). I seriously doubt that I've ever been fitter in my life than I was when I got home from Cinci. Very, very physically demanding, but a great experience.

2017 dates for Mam-Luft & Co are June 5 - 9 (registration isn't open yet).
