Can anyone comment on the feasability of the ballet major at CCM while also taking classes on the pre-med track? This is a school DD may be interested and she is attending an SI in the area this summer, so we could take an extra day or two to make a visit, but don't want to waste our time if it's not possible to do both! Thanks!

It is difficult but in no way impossible to double major while in CCM. It definitely helps to come in with AP credits, and it might require taking a few courses over the summer, but it is possible to get a double major even while being in a conservatory. The ballet department is very understanding that dancers need to prepare for a career after their dance career is over, and can help with scheduling and such. I know there are three or four students in this year's freshman class who are double majoring in ballet and pre physical therapy.

Thanks for your reply, claeri. The pre-med program is not a major, so she wouldn't be technically double majoring. I am kind of having a hard time getting a straight-forward answer from the school about whether or not is possible to be a ballet major and also follow the pre-med program. A bit frustrated because we would really like to visit the school this summer when we will be in the area.

My daughter just finished her freshman year at CCM. The ballet program is wonderful - just to give you an idea, though, the ballet classes are all during the day i.e. 9 to 2 and all the dance majors need to block off 3-5pm in the afternoon because close to performances, most of the rehearsals take place during that time, so no other classes should be scheduled. My daughter ended up taking her English class and some psychology classes at night and it worked out really well for her. If you know the classes that your daughter needs to take for the pre-med, you can search on the U of Cin web site under class offerings and see which classes (in general) are offered at night or talk to the admissions people in the pre-med program and ask if most of the classes are also offered at night. My daughter is very interested in psychology and wants to minor - a lot of psyc classes are at night - how convinient. I would recommend calling CCM admissions office and the pre-med college admissions office with your specific questions. The ballet faculty are all wonderful, but probably can not help you with questions on other majors. The CCM dance web site has the curriculum listed - just so you know, some of the requirements are changing when the univeristy is switching to semesters in 2012. Hope this helps a bit. I know it is a big decision and we were there a year ago!

Took a look at the first year curriculum for the ballet major and was shocked to see pointe is only once a week and is only a 50 min class. Is this a change with the new semester system this year? Also it appears the schedule only allows for 1 academic class per semester? We loved the school when we visited, but DD's goal is med school and it doesn't look like she will be able to take the academics she will need.

Hello. There has only been one post for this school this year. Would like to hear from current students (or parents of) with info on last year and this year so far. How many graduated this past summer and any info on where graduates went? Any major changes to the program? How many students in the entering freshman class this fall? And is it true that there's only one pointe class a week?
My dd is a junior at UNCSA and CCM is a program she's interested in next year. Thanks so much!

My daughter is a new freshman ballet major at CCM. I believe that she is one of 12 or 13 freshman. She says that they take 2 pointe classes a week - 45 minutes each. She loves the ballet there, loves the program and is also very happy at UC in general.

Just Looking, did your daughter come from a more pointe intensive background? Also, do you know how competitive is this program to get in to?

My daughter did come from a program where she had pointe every day after ballet. As far as the competitiveness, I don't have a whole lot of knowledge on that, but I belieive it is on par with many of the other college ballet programs. I think that UC likes to have about 50 total dancers each year. Again, my memory is a bit hazy on this, but I want to say that at the audition, they said they would offer a place in the program to about 50% of the auditionees. My daughter is impressed with the talent that is surrounding her at UC, and is very happy that she is there with them. Hope this helps!
