Ballet Schools in California - San Diego

Melissa - okay, about all the other questions.  Max has his own small school and it's really hard to find information on it.  It's kind of a word of mouth thing.  I'll look around again for him and get back to you.  City Ballet will lean towards Balanchine style in training.  California Ballet - not sure if there really is a consistant syllabus or style.  It is a pretty big school, or used to be anyway.  Not super familiar with the school.  I'm more familiar with the company as many of the dancers take classes at the studio I used to work at.  San Diego Ballet used to be really strong (with Max), not sure how it is now.

You may like Ballet Arte.  More russian style I believe.  Nice couple, they have some solid dancers coming out of that studio.  It's located in Solana Beach.  Lynch Dance Institute is located in Poway.  California Ballet is in the Clairmont Mesa area.  San Diego Ballet is in Pointe Loma.  CIty Ballet is in Pacific Beach.

Like I said, PM me with questions.  I've been around the dance world in SD for a long time both as a studio employee and as a mom of a ballet dancer - and as a dancer myself!

Please, let’s continue to share the information on the open Board so that all our members researching schools in this area can benefit.  Otherwise, there is no point in maintaining the threads.

And please also remember that we ask for first-hand knowledge or experience with the schools only, not someone else’s.

Okay.  Great.  I just didn't want to compare too much or anything.  I'll share from first hand experience.

Lady Elle --  We are considering Lynch Dance for my daughter.  Do you feel that your daughter improved with their training.  Are their classes challenging?  Also, what is the atmosphere of the studio?  Are the girls friendly and non-competitive?  Thanks so much!!

Sah, my dd also dances at Lynch Dance Institute.

The Lynches are lovely people, both genuine and transparent. Their classes are challenging and my dd has grown tremendously while dancing under them. The atmosphere is friendly and the dancers are supportive of each other. I would highly encourage your dancer to try them out and see if it is a good fit.

I am happy to answer any other questions that you may have.

Sah, just so you know, they are holding an audition for their daytime program this Sunday 3/11. I am not sure if your daughter is looking for that but wanted to let you know.

Noodles --  Thanks so much.   I saw the PEP program on the website.  It looks like something we would be interested in.  I may have her audition on Sunday.  Thanks for the information.

Sah - yes, my dd has improved greatly dancing with LDI.  She will miss them a whole lot when she graduates this year! My dd is not in the day program but knows the dancers who are.  Its a small program and the girls are pretty tight.  The classes are challenging.  My dd tends to shy from things that scare her like fouettes and Ms Dickson doesn't let her shy awayl. She needs someone who pushes her past her comfort level in order to move forward.  She's hoping she will find the same nudging in the college program she ends up with.

I saw that San Diego academy of ballet and ballet insititute of San Diego merged — anyone know more about this resulting studio?

I’m I think Lynch may be the right fit for DD13 but we won’t know until we go in person.  These merged schools might be worth checking into (DD likes her modified Russian technique that she takes now).

Sah — did you end up going to the LDI audition?

It might be a good idea to go to the end of the year performances schools you and your dk are interested in.  I know I always get good information from watching the school performances,

Lady Elle,

Agree — the shows are a great way to learn more.  But we move in August from the east coast.
