Sunnygirl,

I like the she could be doing something worse idea. I may use that along with the at least she's not a couch potato. She does love dance so much. She also still does have some dance free days she usually dances two or three days a week and we have nothing on weekends yet.

Sunnygirl,

Also yes they're all different types. She takes Acro, ballet, hip hop, and tap. She wants to add jazz and contemporary.... But may be taking a year off from tap.

AB’sMom,

My daughter danced 3 days a week this past season so I'm hoping another class wouldn't change that much. She still has at least 2 weekdays and the weekend for freedom. She won't go to comp for another year or so.

BalletMomMN,

That's how I feel. A few free days a week is important. School work is as well of course!

Mollysmom, that's wonderful to hear.  The arts are an important part of education for many kids. I hope your DD continues to thrive in school and explore the world of dance.

Mollysmom, I agree with the other comments that suggest you check out the guidelines by age. They state that a 9 year old should have at least 2 ballet classes/week for 1 hr 15 mins each. At 7, I think it’s okay for your daughter to have up to 2 ballet classes as well.

It’s also okay to pick up other styles of dance. When my dd was that age, she took 2 ballet technique classes per week. A third class was usually added on as a rehearsal. She also did tap and modern, for a total of 4-5 classes per week. She was able to keep up with going to the studio 3 days/week & stay on top of her schoolwork. She LOVED it. But fair warning, after a few years, it may be difficult to keep up with an increasing ballet schedule plus other dance genres.

I think your daughter taking 4-5 classes isn’t the worst idea, but I wouldn’t recommend any more than that. Young kids with loaded dance schedules can burn out or become injured quickly. Ballet is the foundation for dance & should increase over the years. I can’t imagine how she’ll take all the other genres with ballet, say, 3 times per week. If she is doing this recreationally, it shouldn’t be a problem. If she ever finds that she wants to become a professional dancer, I’d slow down. She’s still young so it’s a good time for her to experiment & determine her favorite dance genre that she’d like to pursue.
