Guest Ballet_babe_123
Hi guys. I haven't been around lately because I've been down with the flu so it's so nice to be back!!! A while back I bruised my toe nail and while it hurt for a while to do pointe work I just worked through it and it stopped hurting and I didn't think anything of it. Recently the nail has started to detach and it's going to fall completely off. Now I realize that many many dancers go through this and don't even blink an eye, but this is the first time it's ever happened to me and I'm afraid I'm being rather a big baby about it . My question is, once it falls off, will I still be able to do pointe? I have a competition on the 1st of April in which I have a pointe solo so I really can't afford to miss out on any rehearsal time. I feel very naieve but I really don't know what to do. I've been stressing about this for weeks now and I feel a little better just throwing the question out there Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
I'm glad you're over your bout with the flu and can be back with us. If you haven't noticed already, your nail is coming off partly because there's a new one coming in already beneath it. You should have no "quick" or nailbed exposed if you just let it work its way off naturally. You should be able to do pointework with little or no pain from the nail area. You might want to tape the end of the toe, but it's not serious at all. Quote Link to comment
Guest Ballet_babe_123
Oh Mr. Johnson, you have no idea how relieved I am right now. Whew! I'm so paranoid and tend to make mountains out of molehills. Thank you for clearing my ever-worrying mind! Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
No problem - see, your toenail isn't AWOL, it's "relieved of duty" by its successor. Quote Link to comment
Guest IrishLiLangel89
Yeah, I have a friend at my dance studio, and her nail completely came off! She couldn't do pointe for like a week, but then her toenail grew back slowly, and she was on pointe in no time! I also had a surgery done on my toe two nights before opening night of "The Nutcracker"! I had an ingrown toenail and had to cut some of it off! My doctor told my not to dance on pointe for one day, and on opening night, I was on my toes! He even said I could hit him if it hurt, it never hurt! But know with 2 weeks until our upcoming show, I am getting another ingrown toenail! AHHH! So I am gonna get another surgery! Oh well, I know that I will be able to dance! Talk to you later! Guest twinklehooves
I've never lost a toenail. Whew!!! My friend at my studio has- and she was as worried as you ballet_babe_123. I don't know if it worked or helped or what, but she put nail clue on it. For fake nails. I have NO idea if it worked or not. BTW- what does AWOL stand for?? Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted March 26, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted March 26, 2003 It's a military term, twinklehooves. It means Absent Without Leave. Quote Link to comment
