Animefleur
Not sure where the best place to post this would be, so I'll try here first--please move it if I should have put it somewhere else. I am now in the final stages of making that audition video I've been working on for the last 5 weeks. The video is more for placement than being a formal "audition." We filmed the barre work and everything in the center except for the grand allegro. Thing is, I thought we would break it up into three sections: barre, center, and pointe for filming. I was tired from the get-go....bad change in weather affected my sinuses plus heavy classes yesterday=tired dancer today who was just praying should could get through the barre. Anyway, did center really tried to push myself but was just one of those days. None of my pirouettes landed well, dropped leg in grande rond de jambe I know I can do better than that--I usually do much better than that. I feel badly because the teacher has taken me under her wing and wasn't feeling well and came in just for me. Also she's giving up her day off just so I can finish this film in time. She didn't say anything about the combinations not being too great, although she hasn't seen the tape yet and I have. Anyway, tomorrow is a new day. And I'm sure I'll do better but I still get nervous. Should I worry about trying to re-film the center? I only have one more day left to get it all done. Maybe after I've finished the other stuff I could see about re-doing the parts I don't like. Or should I even care since it's mostly for placement and that way if I have an off-day at the program I'll still be doing ok? The other question is, as teachers, what would be a nice gesture of appreciation for all the time you've spent helping a student like me? She's been so patient with me through it all and has really done a huge favor for me. Thanks for all of your advice Link to comment
ConstanzaElisabeth
since its just for placement, i wouldnt worry about it. you can always prove yourself later and ask to be moved if you feel you have been misplaced. many girls probably will be moved around, and even live placement auditions usually have some rearranging to do after placement is set. they will be able to tell by barre how strong your technique is anyways, and teachers can usually tell whether you are having an off day because technique is always there. good luck! Mel Johnson
But if you're not happy with the present product, go ahead and reshoot the center! See what your teacher thinks. And a bouquet of flowers is always appropriate for a teacher who's done something nice for you. Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted March 21, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted March 21, 2003 I say reshoot the center. As an auditioner who has just finished watching a large number of video auditions, I find the center work MUCH more important than the barre for a teenage student at the upper intermediate to advanced level. I EXPECT the barre to be very good. I want to see if they can connect it all in the center with balance, placement, rotation, etc., and to see if they can MOVE! I want to see port de bras and épaulement, articulation of feet when moving, use of the plié for connecting movements, jumps and relevés, and of course the level of advancement, which depends on the difficulty of the combinations and how well things, especially pirouettes, are finished, not just executed. Animefleur
Oh yes, pirouettes are the bain of my life as a dancer. Didn't land one of them cleanly in the video Of course I did two nice ones in my later class. Too bad I couldn't get that on video.... Thank you Ms. Leigh and Mjr. Johnson, I will try to reshoot it. Depends on how much time the teacher has. I know center is more important than barre. That's where you really see what a dancer is made out of, right? Link to comment
Animefleur
Thanks for the advice. I finished the second half of the video today. I'm pleased with how things went Didn't end up with enough time to reshoot some of the center, so it will just have to do. I watched it playback and the film doesn't look as off as it felt that day. The pointe center is very nice--if I do say so. I have a question, though, mostly for Ms. Leigh. With all the audition videos you sort through, do you watch through the entire video? Maybe run it through fast motion and then watch to see if you see anything extraordinary one way or another to palyback real time? Since my best work is at the end of the tape are they likely to even watch that far into the video? Barre is good and clean. Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted March 25, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted March 25, 2003 I watch the whole tape if they have sent what I ask for, which is not very often ;) I am not interested in barre. Advanced dancers should all look good at the barre. So, I skip over the barre and go directly to center. I do watch the entire center. Link to comment
