I'm only a sophomore in high school, but I'm very curious on colleges. I'm looking for a college in the Minneapolis/St. Paul MN area or within a few hundred miles of there. I would like it to have a dance program but not be super competetive. I'm probably an intermediate dancer so I wouldn't be able to handle professional level. Any suggestions?

Hello notsotinydancer, welcome to the Young Dancers' forum on Ballet Alert! Online :)

I am not familiar with dance programs in that area, however I will recommend that you order Dance Magazine's College Guide. It's a good resource for finding college dance programs all over the country!

I got it at the library last year and saved some money ;) but I'm not sure if most libraries get it. ?? (You might want to check it out, notsotinydancer) I'm so happy to live within a short drive of my city's Fine Arts Branch regional library which has more dance books than I could read in a year :):D Also, n.s.t.d. - Best of luck with the college search process...I just finished mine and happily found a school where I plan on minoring in dance next year. My situation sounds much like yours because I'm an intermediate dancer who definitely wants to continue in college...hope you find a school that is perfect for you, and you are wise to start so early!

Yes Indiana University does have a ballet program (I'm in it :D ), but I would classify it as pretty competitive and pre-professional. So its probably not the program that notsotinydancer is looking for.

Some schools have you fill out a survey in your junior year that lets colleges know what you're looking for so they can start bombarding you with pamphlets and things. You can look through those pamphlets to see if any of the schools offer dance as a major. If they do, fill out their little reply card. Or, you can get on collegeboard.com and start searching for schools in that area.
