Mel Johnson
It's a little late - OK, it's a LOT late for finding summer dance opportunities on the major or even regional school level, but maybe there's something local that you can access. Atlanta area people, any leads? Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted April 6, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted April 6, 2003 AtlantaDncr, as Mr. Johnson said, it is way late for Summer Intensive programs, however, if a "camp" is what you are looking for, you might still be able to find that. Check Dance Magazines ads for Dance Camps. There are some in the northern part of the country, but not sure about anything in the south. For future reference, the auditions for Summer Intensives start in early January, and are usually finished by early March. I was in Atlanta auditioning for our program in the middle of January. The list of all the auditions comes out in Dance and in Pointe magazines in December (Jan. issue) and January (Feb. issue). Some even advertise as early as the December issue, which is out in mid-November. Quote Link to comment
Guest AtlantaDncr
What exactly is a summer intensive? I was really looking into Ballet Magnificat over in Jackson, if thats what u mean as a "Summer Intensive" What is the difference between a "camp" "workshop" and a "summer intesnive" Thanx! Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted April 6, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted April 6, 2003 I just do not thing of Intensive Programs in Ballet as "camps". A camp is something that takes place by a lake, or out in the woods. You might dance sometimes, but it is not a program totally focussed on nothing but dance. A workshop is usually a short program, like a weekend, or a week. A Summer Intensive is 5 or 6 weeks of nothing but dance. All of the people attending a Summer Intensive are there to dance, not for other activities, although there may be some interesting weekend things to do. The word "camp" just says something totally different to me, and it's not what ballet is about. Quote Link to comment
Guest AtlantaDncr
O ok. Thanx. Do you know when Ballet Magnificat will post their audition dates for next year? I dont htink they've posted them on their webpage yet. Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted April 7, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted April 7, 2003 It's a bit early for that, as most of us are still working on getting this summer going. As I said, the ads come out in November or certainly by December for the January/February/March auditions. Quote Link to comment
Guest AtlantaDncr
What are some other Summer intensives that are closer that Jackson Mississippi?? Are there some in Atlanta? Quote Link to comment
Guest AtlantaDncr
I am on the Ballet Magnificat's webpage..... It doesnt say anything about auditioning. Do I have to?? I thought you have to audition for most if not ALL intensive programs. Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted April 7, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted April 7, 2003 Well Atlanta Ballet certainly has one! There are programs in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, VA, DC, etc. They are all over the country! You are in Atlanta, for heavens sake! Are you not training at one of the major schools there? There are several! If you are serious about ballet then you need to be at one of the schools where they know about these things and attend the auditions and go to Summer Intensives at least by the age of 13 or 14. Do you get Dance or Pointe Magazine? It sounds to me like you are either not seriously involved in ballet, or just have not been involved in the type of school where you receive training that prepares you for these programs. Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted April 7, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted April 7, 2003 I'm sorry, but I have no specific information about Ballet Magnificat, but I would think one would have to audition. But please do not limit yourself to one program. There are many very fine programs in the country. Quote Link to comment
Guest AtlantaDncr
Well, i am seriously committed to Balelt and Dance. My teacher attends Georgia Ballet. My teacher is talking to me about auditioning for Georgia Ballet next year. I dont get magazineslike Dance or Pointe, but i have subscribed to Dance magazine like a week ago and havent gotten my magazine yet. I go to a christian dance school, and the one summer program they talk about is Ballet magnificat. I'm just not informed about intensives since i usually just go to my dance company's workshop. But lately i have been thinking that i should be moving up to more professional workshops and intensives during the summer. My teachers have really been talking to me about this, but mostly its been about ballet magnificat. Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted April 7, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted April 7, 2003 I see. Well, there is a rather large ballet world out there, so you might want to broaden your horizons a bit, that is if you are thinking about becoming a dancer. Quote Link to comment
Guest AtlantaDncr
Yea, dance is my life!! Quote Link to comment
Guest alliecat93
Well, I might be able to help you with info about Ballet Magnificat. I am going there this summer and I know people who went last summer. I used to attend a Christian Ballet school, but I realized that since I want to be a professional ballet dancer, I needed to go to a different school. I would suggest that you look into other schools if you aren't getting enough of the right kind of training. I know nothing about your school though; for all I know it could be a wonderful ballet school. I now take classes 6 days a week and I am getting top notch training. Ballet Magnificat does not require an audition. I was accepted into one of the major summer intensives that required an audition, but I chose to attend Ballet Magnificat for several different reasons. If you have other questions about Ballet Mag, I'll try to answer them for you! Quote Link to comment
