Arms

There have been many posts on this board about stomach muscles but I have now been wondering about arms. I myself do not have the most well defined arms and was wondering what I could do to work on the that. I lift a five pound (curls, etc.) and I also do various forms of push ups. Any help is welcome!

This is a sort of large question, isn't it? By "defined", do you mean accurate in terms of port de bras, or in the muscular sense? You don't need big muscles to have good-looking arms. If you are using your arms correctly, then you should be developing the proper muscles, simply by isometrics!

you want muscle definition, right? ive been trying weights, i think theyre two pound or something, because if you do lighter weights with more reps, i think youre supposed to build tone instead of bulk. ive mostly been concentrating on my back and shoulders. theres arm weight excercises in pilates, and the crocodile and airplane (i think its called) from yoga. i used to have good triceps from the low demi second we always used in corps roles, but i dont have that as much anymore.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems to me that dancers don't have defined arm muscles. Most dancers' arms are thin and stringy, but they are pretty because of the way they are held. I don't think one needs to lift weights for ballet, except if you are a guy. That's just my opinion.

Hey, gang! Let's give Rachel a chance to respond to my question, then you can take over with anecdotes. Remember, Ms. Leigh and I give the advice around here.

this doesn't have to do with arm muscles, but I have noticed during class that my arms aren't always clean, and they hyperextend alot. Is there something I can think about that will help this?

Yes, don't straighten your elbows so much that they lock. That's a general rule for everybody, not just those with hyperextended arms.

Hi there! Sorry I have taken so long to respond to Mr. Johnson's question. I am looking for some definition in my arms as far as muscles - everyone has muscles but me! My arms are very thin and well, bony looking and anything to just tone them up a bit would be helpful. Although the root of my problem may be in my port de bras. Any advice please! Thanks a bunch, Rachel:confused:

OK, plenty of dancers have strong arms without having much to show for it - the muscles are powerful, but elongated. Just by using the arms correctly will strengthen them. Correct port de bras starts with the back muscles! Then the upper arm turns out from the shoulder, while the lower arm rotates so that the palm of the hand is not flat to the audience. Just doing this correctly will strengthen the arm muscles, to say nothing of the back muscles that help support them.
