Guest Feet2004
Hi, this is a bit of an awkward question because none of you have seen me dance. But, I was wondering what you think of me trying to audition for some of the top schools after high school, and if you could tell me what they look for. I have only been dancing for two years, now I am sixteen. I dance about 10 hours a week now, and this summer it will be about 24hours. I take every level of class from very beginning to advanced, and even have private lessons with my ballet teacher. I do have a good body, my arms and legs are long, my feet are very high and flexible (I am working very hard on strength) but I am very well proportioned, I have a classic face, long neck and elegant lines. Everyone who sees me dance is shocked when I tell them how long I have been dancing. My technique still isn't up to where it should be for my age, but I am very focused and hard working. I am very determined to make a career out of it. I have good turnout, and use it well, I take corrections well, and I have pretty good musicality. I just want to know if I work really really hard this summer and all of next year if it is realistic for me to audition for the top summer programs. Please tell me anything you can. I want to dance (ballet) more than anything, I have given up my entire social life for it, and work for my teacher to earn my classes. I know I need to ask her, and I will, but whatever you could tell me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kimberley Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted May 1, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted May 1, 2003 Hello Kimberley, welcome to the Young Dancers' forum here on Ballet Alert! Online It sounds like you have the physical facility, and you are taking all the training that you can get, so I would think there might be a good chance for you by next year. I would suggest that you make a list of all the audition dates when the January Dance Magazine comes out in December, decide which ones you are interested in, and go to as many as possible. If there is not an audition anywhere near you for a particular school, most of them do accept video auditions. Link to comment
Guest dance4life87
Wow, feet 2004 I have practically the exact situation as you. Although, I dance about double the time you do during the weeks and I'm not sure about the summer. I take almost every class at my studio except the lowest level. And demonstrate for the next level above that one.The only difference I can think of between us is that i don't have the exact perfect ballet body type but ill be trying to slim my legs down a bit before auditioning next year, and my pointe isn't the best in the world but I'm working on it! It's nice to know there is someone almost exactly like me:) Link to comment
Guest Feet2004
Yeah, we are a lot alike. I am just really bummed about not having started when I was young. I asked my teacher tonight if I worked really hard this summer and next year if I might be able to get into a good summer program, I asked if it was slightly realistic. She said yeah, that it was slightly realistic, she said lets start be working really hard this summer and then we'll see. She is a really frank person, so I am pretty happy with that response. And I am right with you on the wieght thing, I want to lose a few pounds before I actually audition, but I don't think that will be a problem. Thanks for the help, you encouraged me to actually talk to my teacher (a really had thing to do) I don't know if everyone had a hard time talking to their teachers about things like that. I was worried that I would spill my dream and would be crushed. I am pretty satisfied to work really hard this summer and then see, now she knows what I am aiming for, so she can adjust my training if she needs to. Thanks, Kim Link to comment
Guest dance4life87
You see, thats the only thing I've not been able to do yet. I hadn't told anyone except for family that i want to be a dancer, because then I thought that if I told people and told them the age I started at, they would feel bad and I'd feel crushed as well. But dont give up because if it's what you want to do go for it, what have you got to lose right? Link to comment
Guest ziva cvar
God, you are all so happy and satisfied in your ballet career!I am now dancing classical ballet for eleventh year in the nationall ballet school ,that is acctually the only ballet school in our country, but everyone is waiting to get rid of us. I cant imagine my teacher work with us extra hours. He doesnt like us and because of thet we dont like him. No one would have enough of courage to ask him about auditioning or going to other school...This year I am doing my final exams and because I mentioned him and also showed that his attitude is not right at all he didnt let me to perform nor at production neither somewhere else. Can you imagine you being in the last grade and not performed at the end because your teacher didnt want to work with you any more, because I didnt agree with him!!And not just that, also my whole career deprnds on his decidions that might not be really positive for me....! Guest IrishKitri
Hi Ziva, how old are you now? Have you ever thought about trying out for the European Ballet Conservatory in St. Poelten in Austria? It´s very famous and very good - their website is http://www.ballett.cc ... I got to know a girl from dance.net who is starting there in fall. Another thing is the conservatory of Vienna and the State Opera school in Vienna ... just for Austria (but St. Poelten is definitely the best one). Austria is nearest to Slovenia so maybe that´s an option for you? Link to comment
Guest ziva cvar
Hey Irishkitri, it is so nice that you took on concern for me. I dont remember when it happened last that anyone suggested sth to me for ballet. I mean in my school and not on this board. Well, this konservatorium looks so great, but I dont know a word in german language. I've heard of konservatorium in wien, but I am not sure that I am good enough for them. I mean it doesnt really help if you are gifted, talented, musical person, the most of a good dancer is practice, what I definately didnt have enough. Or maybe I had quite of it, but without any effect. However, I will maybe try to get some more informations about these two schools for next year when I will finish my ballet school. Link to comment
Guest IrishKitri
Ziva, Don´t hesitate to audition for them. The girl I know told me that EVERYONE was WAY better than her, more flexible, better technique, better expression, everything. And that she never thought that she would get in - but she got in. It is always worth trying, and specially St. Poelten offers German courses, too. So not speaking German right now shouldn´t be a problem. Go for it girl! I will try to find English information about the Conservatory of Vienna. The Ballet Department is Department 12, but as far as I know they only take dancers till 18, so hurry up. All the best.
