Hopefuldancer
Today in class we had a new teacher who corrected me on lifting my hip when I develope to the side. But when I tried to keep it square, it seemed like I could only keep my leg at 90 degrees.. It seems like all the photos I see of dancers doing developes have their hip lifted and pelvis tilted.. So is this correct or not? Is there a way I can correct this habit.. And tips? Could it be a matter of flexibility? Any stretches? Thanks Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted May 3, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted May 3, 2003 Nope, not correct. The pelvis does not tilt nor the hip lift in an à la seconde développé. Sorry! Do dancers do it? Yes. Does that make it right? Nope. Extension without placement is contortion, and that is not what ballet is about. Link to comment
ConstanzaElisabeth
i am not sure what muscles are actually used in extensions a la seconde, but it seems to be more of the inner thigh/sartorus. if you use the upper part of the thigh, you have to lift you hip to allow the leg to get higher because there is no freedom in the hip socket. it also helps to think of placement of teh back. i have a question concerning this also-i seem to be able to get decent placement on teh left, but to teh right, i have to lift my hip. it feels like a muscle imbalance, where i cant get teh correct placement because the wrong muscles take over and wont relax or let the weaker muscles do teh work. with the left leg, it is very easy in extensions because teh leg lays open and allows teh correct muscles to work, which are much stronger on that side. i have talked to my teachers, but it doesnt seem to help. some days i can manage slightly to correct it, but im not sure what i do differently. is there any way i could try to fix this? Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted May 3, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted May 3, 2003 Constanza, if it is correct on one leg, then figure out exactly what you are doing with that leg and try to do exactly the same thing on the other side. One side will always be a bit easier and go a bit further than the other, as we are not symmetrical. You just have to work harder on the weaker side. You do lift the thigh on the way from retiré to a développé side, however, you have to lift it UNDER the hip socket and not lift the hip itself. If you are having difficulty with it, try moving it VERY slightly forward, so that you can maintain your rotation, and be sure that the lower leg is forward of the upper leg. Link to comment
BlackbirdBallerina
I have the same problem... I just can't feel it on one side. I don't DO anything to my knowledge differently, but I really look so much better on one side than the other, and it feels right too. Link to comment
ConstanzaElisabeth
our teacher insists that we have our leg forwards of our body, and i have noticed that this helps. thank you, and i will certainly work on that. Link to comment
Hopefuldancer
This is a problem for me, as one of my hips is higher than the other(something my teacher last year pointed out to me) Is there anything I can do to get around this problem? Link to comment
