Guest Arak
I have been out of class all week with a back injury. A muscle in my lower back has been swollen and tender, and I didn't want to further antagonize it. I have been taking ibuprofen and putting ice on it, and it doesn't hurt nearly as much anymore, though the swelling hasn't changed. I went to the doctor this morning, and she told me it would be fine to get back into my normal routine, even though it is still very swollen. But I'm not so sure that it's a very good idea to be taking ballet class with it. What do you think? Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted May 15, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted May 15, 2003 Arak, since it is muscular, I think you can let the pain level dictate how much you can do. If you go to class, then be careful in things like cambré back and also back extensions like arabesque and attitude. Just take it a bit slow and easy at first, warm up very carefully, and see how it goes. If there is a lot of pain, then don't push it, stop. Give it a few more days to calm down. Link to comment
Guest NSBDancer
I admire you for not being an "ignorant dancer" (dancing no matter what happens :-P) I'd say, if the doctor told you you could go back, then go for it! You don't want to fall behind any more than you need to. Just be a little easier when you do back exercises and moves, etc. Link to comment
Miriam
I had a backache, probably a pulled muscle on the left side of my lowe back, it was still a bit sore yesterday, but I went to class anyway... and guess what... it didn't bother me at all during class and the pain is pretty much all gone now! :-) Don't take my advice though, I'm just very stubborn and impatient ;-) Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted May 28, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted May 28, 2003 Stubborn can be a good thing.....sometimes ;) Impatient not a good thing when it comes to ballet. There is no instant cure, just like there is no instant technique. This can get you into more trouble if you are really injured. A dancer will learn, over time, that there are minor aches and pains that you work through, and then there are pains that must be dealt with and will not be helped at all by continuing. This comes with experience, but until one has that experience it is always best to stop and figure out what is wrong before any further damage is done. That is one of the reasons that we discourage young dancers from giving advice here at Ballet Talk, because they simply do not have the experience yet to know what is best. Relating your own stories is fine, but the advice part is for the moderators! Link to comment
