Too much arch, not enough instep

A teacher pointed out something to me that I had never realized before. She said that I have a really nice arch, but my arch is more in my arch than in my instep. (It made sence when she said it; I can't remember exactly what she said.) She said that I need to push out where my ribbons are on my pointe shoes. I used to get this correction a lot, but I haven't gotten it for a while. I understand the whole concept of trying to push out where your ribbons are, but for some reason, my feet just won't do it. When I put on dead pointe shoes to stretch out my feet, I can get a really nice line of my leg and my instep is "pushed out", but I can't seem to get the same lovely line in shoes that aren't dead. It has been suggested to me that I do toe-pushups (full pointe to 3/4 pointe or demi pointe). Is there anything else that might be able to help me? I would appreciate any suggestions. Also, I realize that really working through you feet and stretching your foot through the whole leg helps and I have really been using my feel a lot more in tondues and other such steps, but it doesn't seem to be helping with my instep problem on pointe. When I pointe my foot in technique shoes I can get a nice line on my leg though.

Allie, it is more difficult to achieve the same line in pointe shoes, and takes more time. Patience and perseverance are the keywords here. Keep working! Have you tried a 3/4 shank pointe shoe? If you are strong enough to work with that, it might help the look. Ask your teacher about that!

Yes, I know that I'll have to be patient and I will keep working very hard! :( Is it normal to have a more developed arch than instep?

I currently wear switch off using Chacott Veronese and Grishko 2007. The 2007 is 3/4 shanked and the Veronese is full shanked.

Is there any difference in the way your foot looks in the Chacott and the Grishko?

As to the question about "normal", I'm not sure there is any such thing as normal ;) However, it is not unusual to see a foot with more arch than instep.

Sorry that it took me so long to reply; I wanted to pay attention to how the shoes felt over a period of classes. I actually find it easier to get the desired line of the leg with the Chacotts. I think this mught be due to the fact that Grishkos are just a harder shoe. I think that if I order a medium shank in the Chacotts instead of the hard they might be wonderful.

Besides stretchning the feet, do you know of anything that might help me improve my instep? Also, would you recommend a shorter vamp perhaps?

Thanks for all of your help!!! :):D

Yes, if you do not have a high instep, then a shorter vamp should work better for you.
