Guest dancingforever
I live in Hawaii and am looking ahead to SI auditions. I want to audition for 6 places in New York. Not all accept videos, and I'm worried about the ones that do. Wouldn't an SI pick someone they saw in person over a video? I might convince my parents to let me go to NYC for 5 days in January. Unfortunately, not all auditions will be in that time frame. Do you think I could call the schools in advance and ask if I could take a class and be evaluated through that? Or is there anything else I could do? Thanks! Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted November 28, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted November 28, 2003 Yes, dancingforever, there is somewhat of a barrier between you and the SI auditions. However, I think video auditions are a viable alternative with many schools. I have checked our acceptance ratio over the last few years, and the acceptance from video is generally right about the same as the rate from the auditions. You can usually take a class at a school sometime during the year and ask to be evaluated for the summer program at that time. We do that quite often. Your problem in NY would be that the only SI's there, or at least major programs, are SAB, ABT, and Joffrey. I don't know if SAB will allow visitors to take class or not, so you would need to contact them. ABT does not have a regular school going during the year, therefore that is another problem. You should be able to take class at Joffrey. As for other SI programs around the country, you would need to travel to their school unless they just happened to be holding their NY audition during the time you are there. So, I would go ahead and make a video, and also contact the NY schools to find out if you can audition while you are there. Good luck! Quote Link to comment
ConstanzaElisabeth
what do you think about sending videos for university programs? i live in alaska, and i am planning on taking two trips next semester for auditions, but it is just so much cheaper to do a video. also, you can see yourself and correct things. my mom doesnt want all the hassle of a video and i hate making my teacher put in all that extra time, but i dont want to take so much time away from rehearsals next semester either. what is your opinion? Guest Lukayev
Oh my GOSH, I think dancingforever is in my French class at school! If you are... um.. let me think.. Vay-Vay! YES!! As for auditioning with videotape - as you know, people at my studio have to audition via videotape because there are just no PEOPLE who come all the way out here to Hawaii! But we've all been accepted to the SI's of our choice, so either fortune's on our side or ... videos work just as well. I'm thinking a little of both. I know this reply isn't exactly professional but we can discuss more in French with Canfield. Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted November 29, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted November 29, 2003 Constanza, the problem with video for college auditions is that it does not give YOU a chance to see the campus, the dance department, experience the teachers, etc. I don't think I would want to commit to a dance program in a college without being there first. Guest dancingforever
Thank you all for your replies! I'll still aim for a live audition but I'll know that if that doesn't work out, videos will be fine. And oui, Lukayev, I will see you in French avec Mr. Canfield. Wear VV! Quote Link to comment
