Guest IrishKitri
I have never been too flexible anyways, and when I stop stretching, I lose the tiny bit of fl. very quickly again. My question - I know this is different from dancer to dancer, but how long and how often should a dancer stretch to really improve their flexibility? I am very flexible in my back, but that´s it, it´s a hard battle against anatomy to get my splits, got them both now, but my side split / straddle is still horrible! Any tips? Should I stretch everyday? How long? An hour? I want to improve really really bad IrishKitri Link to comment
Mel Johnson
Stretching is such an individual thing. Stretches, especially passive ones, allowing gravity to help out are part of every warm-up, and vigorous ones, after one is warmed up after class, can be range-extending and beneficial. We've actually got a whole forum of "things to do" in the Archives, under the heading "YD Stretches and Exercise". Look in there, and see what appeals to you. As to how long, you don't have to budget huge gouts of time for it alone. Some people do a straddle split, lean forward, and read a book! Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted December 4, 2003 Administrators Report Share Posted December 4, 2003 And some lie down on their back with their derrière up against the wall, open their legs as far as they will go, and read their book that way I actually prefer this one because the legs remain rotated, whereas, when you bend forward while sitting it's easy to lose the rotation. Warmup would be important for both of these, especially if your hips are tight to begin with. Link to comment
