Matthew Trent and Steven Heathcote of the Australian Ballet.

Steven's been with the company for about 21 years I believe, and hes just amazing. He has great technique, and just works well with different partners. He really gets into his roles, and he fully shows the passion for each dance, and with each role you can see all the expression that he's meant to have. Eg. Romeo and Juliet, the first meeting, he really makes you feel that he has just met his Juliet.

Matthew Trent is a favourite because hes really 'easy' on the eyes. So it makes watching him more enjoyable. He has really good technique, but the Australian Ballet doesn't show him that often. He still hasn't quite reached his peak in dancing (well I think that anyway) but hes still an amazing dancer.

I have several favorites, and I have a very limited knowledge of everyone that's out there. I particularly like Calvin Kitten and Willy Shives from the Joffrey, and ever since Center Stage, I've really liked Sascha Radetsky. I've never seen him or Angel Corella dance live, but I also really like Angel Corella's dancing from the PBS "Born to Be Wild: Men of the ABT" Special last year.

I like:

Peter Boal for balancing his super-clean technique with the drama of the ballet (eg. the Suzanne Farrell Ballet's performances of Apollo).

Vladimir Malakhov for his beautiful line.

Manuel Legris for some undefinable quality I can't quite put my finger on yet. His Le Spectre de la Rose performance on the Paris Dances Diaghilev tape is really spectacular for his stretched quality and continuous movement at every moment, along with whatever it is he's doing with his hands and arms.

I have a new favorite every week or so, but right now I can't keep staring at Damian Woetzel. He's a really sexy dancer in solo parts and just understands how to make his partners in pas de deux look amazing. There are a lot of men who should be studying his partnering style.

Clara, can you say more? We'll be seeing him for the first time (live, in person, that is) next month. I'd love to know what to look for.

Hi Treefrog! Nice to meet you... :(

I have not had the pleasure of watching him dance live but I have seen Center Stage and watched him on TV numerous times. Quite honestly, I may get a little sidetracked by how cute he is :gossip: but I also love the freedom with which he moves and the expression on his face. I think he has great jumps as well. You know the old saying though-He can eat crackers........ :)

I must agree with Andre Yew: Vladimir Malakhov's arabesque is nothing short of romantic. I saw the video of ABT's Le Corsaire, and his jumps are just spectacular. His arms, his legs, his strength, grace and control-what more could you ask for in a male dancer? That, plus the fact that I could stare at his picture for days and not get bored.

Angel Corella has been my favourite male dancer since the age of twelve. He is also a very nice man. I can't count how many times I have met him and he has spoken to me. I love his jumps, turns, and energy that he brings to the stage. I rememeber for hours I would be in my room watching a tape of him dancing Don Quixote. I would practice for hours trying to turn like him on the tape. I would try to capture his effortless balance and rythm. Since I was only twelve I didn't reaize when I was practicing these turns for long periods of time for over a year I was only practicing them to the left side. :D To this very day it is noticable that I am extremely uneven! :o

The last male dancer I saw who really took my breath away was Carlos Acosta... attentive partnering, precise turning, beautiful soft landings from his jumps and just an amazing presence on the stage... I've only seen him dance once, but I’m praying that he comes back to dance with ABT sometime in the near future.

I went to see Carlos Acosta for my tenth birthday...unfortunately, I cannot remember it! Living in Alaska, I am deprived of all ballet performances, I can't wait until I can go to see all of the wonderful dancers in the lower 48!

My favorite male dancer is Baryshnikov. :) Seeing him perform live was a blessing. He could fill the entire stage with his presence just standing there and doing nothing. He paved the way for the current great male stars.

If I had to pick a current ballet dancer it would be Angel Corella (although Carlos Acosta's pirouettes are near text book).
