this is kind of a stupid question, but here goes: is it better to hold things (like splits  ) for a very long time while streching, or is it better to hold it for like 5 sec. and repeat it a couple of times?

It's not a stupid question at all  Actually, with splits, it's probably better to hold them for a bit, but I would not necessarily say a "very long time". And be sure that you are very well warmed up before doing them!

Some exercises require lots of repetition, like things for strength building. But stretching is generally done slowly and carefully, and not a lot of reps. Quality, not quantity for stretching!

Not that long, knitting dancer. Just a few seconds, maybe 10 or 15. I don't know, I never really timed it

No, buck. That would be an "over-split", and is really not a good thing to do for ballet dancers. It's fine for people in Cirque du Soleil
