ADC Sessions

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of trying to decide which of the three ADC sessions to attend. My school closes entirely for the month of August so I don't know whether it would be beneficial to attend the 1st session (June 13-19) and be able to use what I learn at ADC when I get back, the 2nd session (Aug 1-7) and not have to miss any classes at my home school, or the 3rd (Aug 15-21) for the same reason. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this?

I would go to one of the August sessions so I wouldn't have to miss a week that my regular school was open. I think I would go to the last August session, also, because that one is less crowded than the first one.

I didn't even factor in how crowded these sessions would be, but thanks for alerting me of that. The only thing I would worry about if went the last session would be that I will have been "out of practice" (would not have taken classes) for about three week prior to going away.

If you think the last August session will be too long after your classes ended, then I'd do either the June or the 1st August one. I think you would get more attention tho, in the less crowded one in June. so maybe it would be worth missing a week of class- it isn't that long a time to miss. I like June myself, but will have to do the first August one this year because I have other things going on in June and I can't do the last August one because of my work schedule.

Thanks everyone for their feedback. Onyx, that was exactly my hesitation about attending the last August session (the fact that I would have been out of classes for two weeks), so I think I will be attending the 1st session.

I wouldn't worry too much about a no-class interval of three weeks. Last year, that was about the same amount of time that I missed classes before attending the final August session.

I wasn't sure whether I ought to go at all, not merely because I hadn't been to class for so long, but because I had been suffering from severe back spasms, which was the whole reason I couldn't attend class. By the time the ADC session had rolled around, I was pain-free, but still wasn't sure I should be taking the risk.

In the end, I did go, and I had a ball, completely untroubled by my back. Sure, I was a little rusty in class initially, but my progress was rapid, because we were dancing 6-7 hours each day.

Every time I've gone to Adult Dance Camp, I've either been handicapped by not being able to do class for several weeks before, or starting a major project right afterwards that kept me from practicing what I learned there.

My busiest season for work is summer, so fitting ADC in requires sacrifices that I cheerfully make. Nothing like sleeping on a last minute red-eye flight to get the muscles limbered up for a week of ballet! Going to ADC after a couple weeks of zero classes meant playing catch-up reacquiring skills my body had forgotten. But starting a out-of-town gig immediately after ADC was worse, because I couldn't cement all the half-learned stuff I'd learned. Just another example of my ballet learning curve: "two steps forward and one step back".

I think I am going to go to the last August session- my work schedule has become more flexible- but I heard that Pedro won't be teaching then and am really bummed out. Does anyone know if he taught in the last August session last year?

Pedro's contract with Richmond Ballet prevented him from teaching at last summer's late August session too.

Every ADC teacher offers something special, so don't obsess about any one's absence, even the famous creator of "Pedroisms". I've been told he won't be teaching at the early August session this year, which is the one I'll be attending, so I have to give myself the same advice.

OH, I am sad to hear the pedro will not be teaching for eirther Aug sessions. He always makes me smile. I am sure that like last year we will have other great teachers. Can wait until the summer.
