Ballet Talk for Dancers

Dancer or Danseur?

Recommended Posts

What do you guys like to call yourselves? Danseur seems pretty pretentious to me, so I guess that makes me a dancer. My next door neighbor jokingly calls me a ballerino, and that works too. I'll avoid some of the odder terms people have thrown around, since this is a family show.

Dancer generally works for our old friend, Norma Loquendi (the normal way of speaking). Seldom are we placed in a situation where we would use the term "danseur" any more than we are called on to use the term "ballerina" or much less, "danseuse". "Ballerino" is perfectly proper Italian, although not in much usage outside of Italy.
