Lay down, flat back?

Okay, this is a little difficult for me to explain. It's about a stretching exercise. My teacher tells the class to open our legs into staddle/center position sitting down and then we lay down and we have to make sure our backs are flat. This is an average stretch, I know, but I've gotten my back to straighten finally, and it hurts really bad. I can't tell if it's a good hurt or a bad hurt and I have a loooong way to go before I have a perfect center. What do you think? Good hurt or bad hurt?

If it's actually crossed over the line from "stretch" to "pain" it's bad. Ease up on the straddle-spread, or on the flattening of the back, one or the other.
