Bruises from Partnering

I am doing the Adagio from Paquita in this year's Spring Gala. My teacher, Dmitri, sometimes performs the lifts using me to show my partner the hand positions. After he does this, I get bruises sometimes on my ribcage. Is this normal? Is it something I should talk to him about? Please help

Honestly, I can't think of a lift in "Paquita" that requires the man's hands to be up that high. Does your teacher have unusually large hands? Anyway, no, it is not usual to end up with body bruises from classical partnering.

We changed the Adagio choreography to make it a pas de trois. The lifts that hurt are sautes arabesque and the fish. He doesn't really have big hands, but he presses really hard. Would it be inappropriate for me to ask him not to press so hard?

You certainly can. You can also ask him to hold you just a little lower, so he's not pressing flesh onto bone.

Thanks very much. However, one of my other teachers, Sandra, said today that she once had a broken rib from partnering, and that it was no big deal, so I don't know what to think! :)

Broken ribs from partnering usually means an accident, or some REALLY bad partnering.
