mohnurka
I'm not sure whether my question fits this forum; sorry if it does not. I have video tapes of Maya Plisetskaya dancing Dying Swan, but I'm wondering whether tapes of others dancing that variation exist? Are any of them with Russian ballerinas? Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
There are quite a few around, and mostly with Russian ballerinas. What did you have in mind? Quote Link to comment
Amy'sMom
"Nina Ananiashvili & International Stars Vol. 2" has an amazing Dying Swan performance by Nina, and yes, she is Russian. Quote Link to comment
mohnurka
Is there a tape with Galina Mezentseva dancing Dying Swan? Or Yulia Makhalina? Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
Interest in that solo in recent years has been, well...dying. Further, it is more tightly controlled by the Fokine Estate than it used to be. As you go back in time, you'll find more of it, like Ulanova, Toumanova, Timofeyeva, and all the way back to 14-frames-a-second Pavlova. Quote Link to comment
mohnurka
Thank you for all the information. I was just asking because I have to dance the Dying Swan May 9th, and although I know the choreography and have seen it many times, I wanted to see more Quote Link to comment
ToThePointe
There is a tape of Natalia Makarova performing said piece. She is gorgeous in it. Her arms are so expressive. Quote Link to comment
citibob
Where might one buy any performance of the Dying Swan in the USA? Quote Link to comment
Amy'sMom
Try Amazon.com. Just type in the name of the performer, ballet, or company, and you should get some results. Quote Link to comment
mohnurka
citibob, if you visit Amazon.com and just type in Dying Swan, you might not get any results, as tapes of just that piece do not exist (although I'm not sure). You might have to search for tapes with other variations to find it. You could buy Plisetskaya Dances, from Kultur. It's a video about Maya Plisetskaya, and features numerous excerpts from ballets she has danced. Although the cover does not list Dying Swan, it's on the tape. Quote Link to comment
abdwybabe
There was once a series on dance that was hosted by Dame Margot Fonteyn, in the early 80's. I forget the title but it had a clip of Pavlova doing it on film, very rare footage. I think it was the Magic of Dance - six films, produced by the BBC, or something like that. It was a long, long time ago. Janet Edited June 19, 2004 by abdwybabe Quote Link to comment

Dance_Scholar_London
If you have any chance to go to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at the Lincoln Center you should definitely go. They have an amazing archive there and had a lot more material about dance than the Theatre Museum in London. Quote Link to comment
balletstar811
I believe there is a Swan Lake video that Yulia Makhalina stars in, though it is the full length ballet. Quote Link to comment
abdwybabe
The Dying Swan is not from Swan Lake. It is dance to The Swan from Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens. Quote Link to comment
