I didn't get in

About a month ago I auditioned for the department of dance at a college as a minor. Well they turned me down, the worst feeling ever. They placed me in Ballet and Modern Fundamentals. This class includes people who have never danced before. I know everyone needs to work on technique and I'm sure this class will help. But would it be rude to call and ask them to review my tapes (they said they would review them if any question arises) because my dance teacher and other people who have seen me dance was surprised by the reasults. Also if I still get turned down, would it be a waste of time to take the placement audition for the fall.....I'm willing to take Ballet and Modern Fundamentals and Ballet I and Modern I at the same time....I willing to work hard and I want to show them that. I just really want to be a dance minor......and I've dreamed about dancing at this school for a while now.....please help....sorry this is so confusing!

Bethie0420, many university dance programs have very professional standards for their placement of students. If your college dance program has stated that they will review your video again, then I would suggest that you appeal your case. Also taking the audition class probably will not hurt you, but you do need to learn to accept whatever decision the professionals in charge have made eventually. They are better able to judge the level of their classes.

May I ask exactly what they make you do at that kind of audition? Do they have a class, or do you perform a combination (either prepared or taught to you by some faculty)?

Oh, and I know only certain people can give ADVICE advice, but my personal experience, and most other people's experience that I know agree that no audition is ever a waste of time. Each is it's own learning experience! :)

I'm not a student but a mom but....

Something similar happened to my daughter. She auditioned for her college program, didn't get in but was told to take those beginning ballet and modern classes. She took the classes for not one but two semesters and auditioned again and didn't get in. Everyone was shocked (even her college teachers) since she is an advanced dancer. It broke her heart, she now has to find another major but will still be dancing outside of college at a studio. Her college program was modern and she is a ballet trained. It seems that this college prefers untrained dancers and ethnic people who they can mold into their own thinking. I finally saw one of this college's concerts this year and wasn't impressed. In the meantime my daughter has lost time taking dance classes that put her at least a semester behind in her studies. Because it's a college in an overcrowded state system she won't be able to transfer as a freshman. Today was her last day of college dance classes forever. The only plus was that she did have a wonderful ballet teacher there who made having to take beginning ballet tolerable for her. They also let her take an advanced partnering class which she enjoyed but it hurts too much now for her to even put foot in the dance department.
