ABT Wannabe
I have tendonitis in my right foot- and because of it I haven't been dancing for 2 months. I am also in phsyical therapy. I love ballet so, so much and I miss it terribly. Has anyone ever had tendonitis? Does anyone have any advice? xoxo Quote Link to comment
Guest kitrisomeday
I had a topic here on tendonitis a while back. Keep it elevated and ice it frequently. Stay off pointe, let it heal. When I went back on pointe, I started using those bunheads "flexers" pointe shoe ribbons. They really help keep the ribbons from digging into your tendon. Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted May 24, 2004 Administrators Report Share Posted May 24, 2004 ABT Wannabe, I think if you write tendenitis in the search box, you will come up with a LOT of threads on this topic! Quote Link to comment
ABT Wannabe
Thankyou. I also have one more question, Should I continue to dance but not go on pointe? Or will this only make it worse? Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted May 25, 2004 Administrators Report Share Posted May 25, 2004 If it is achilles tendinitis, then every time you point and flex your foot you are putting the same stress on it that caused the problem. It's a stress related injury, therefore it will not heal if the stress continues. Quote Link to comment
Guest waterwerty
How would one go about preventing tendonitis?? Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
Also search on "tendonitis" and "tendinitis". The latter is the exquisitely correct spelling, but I don't know a lot of people who use it, and quite a few of those are doctors! But there are a lot of tendons in the foot, and the Achilles' tendon is the biggest and most important, located at the heel and attaching it to the gastrocnemius muscle and others in the calf. You can have tendonitis (see, that's the way I prefer to spell it, even if it's wrong! ) in any tendon anywhere. Very often, it's not so much "Tendonitis EEK!" but "Tendonitis, oh drat!". vrsfanatic
Using demi plie correctly can help to avoid tendinitis. Maintaining the weight throughout the whole foot can lead to less problems with this chronic condition. Quote Link to comment
Guest Mollieochie
I also have tendonitis. My teacher showed my pressure points that you can press, and it will make your foot feel better. Maybe the moderators will have something to say about them. Im not sure how to describe how to find them. Quote Link to comment
Guest Megari
I had chronic tendinitis when I was younger. I was able to do almost all my normal activities if I did not wear shoes. The rubbing caused by anything against my Achilles tendon caused my symptoms to flare up. If you can toss the shoes and go barefooted or with flip flops it may speed your recovery! I was also prescribed Naprosyn but it made me nauseous. Quote Link to comment
SeaMonkey
I've had it in both my feet and both my wrists. WIth my wrists, I was in this music program and my dr told me I couldn't play for 2 weeks. My teacher was a bit of a ogre and held me to that 2 weeks and made me start playing again, even though I thought I wasn't ready and it flared up even worse and my wrists have been weird and crunchy ever since. I had 2 teachers in the program. The other teacher said it was maybe because of how I was holding myself while I was playing, like I was twisting a certain way or holding my wrists funny and it finally caught up with me. There's apparently dr's in New York who will watch you play and correct how you hold yourself. My feet tendinitis was way less severe than that in my wrists. My teacher thought it was because I was trying to over arch my feet in my pointe shoes and because my alignment was a little funny, so I was pronating sometimes. Mine was on the tops of my feet not in my achilles tendon. I still danced, but I only went twice a week and iced it on the other days. I guess mainly just ICE it, and listen to your body. Don't let anyone tell you that you HAVE to dance on it until you feel ready. Quote Link to comment
xxjan3rz
I also have very chronic tendonitis. It never seems to go away!! Ace bandages have worked really well for me. If you're going to go back to dance, be sure to start off slowly...maybe just doing half of barre the first day and increasing it slowly after that. I hope you feel better! -xxjan3rz Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted May 25, 2004 Administrators Report Share Posted May 25, 2004 Ace bandages are NOT good on achilles tendinitis. Compression is the one element you do not use with that particular condition. Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
What you can use is SOFT compression. As you elevate the foot, put a big squooshy pillow under it. Or maybe a big piece of sheep's fleece. Very comfy, besides! Quote Link to comment
xxjan3rz
Really? The Ace bandage seemed to relieve the pain...but I definitely won't do that again! I'm icing it at the moment...I really want it to go away, NOW! Thanks, Ms. Leigh, for pointing out my error! -xxjan3rz Quote Link to comment
