Guest baby_carrot
I just went and bought The Company on DVD. What did you guys think of it? I really love the dancing! A lot of it's very bizarre and modern, but its amazing work. I think Neve Campbell did pretty well too! There isn't much of a plot, but it's a breath of fresh air from other teenie-dance movies. (Center Stage, etc.) Anyways, just wondering what you guys thought! Link to comment
xxjan3rz
*knock knock* I'm not 17-22, but I just had to comment! I saw it in theaters since the movie was playing in my city. I absolutely loved it. My ballet teacher was in the movie since he is a principal with the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. He had a couple ballet solo sequences. It took so much self control not to yell out "That's my teacher!!" in the middle of the movie. Talk about exciting! I've performed with the Joffrey before, and I've seen them dance so many times (I'm lucky to live in Chicago!) so it was really exciting to see all of the dancers I knew perform in a movie! I also thought Neve Campbell did a great job. I liked the dancing so much that my mom and I bought tickets to see the Joffrey Ballet in "The Company: Favorites". It's a ballet performance featuring the ballets seen in the movie. It was a very breathtaking show. I didn't realize that it was out on DVD. I'll have to rent it!! -xxjan3rz Link to comment
iceydeville
*knockity* (16 turning 17 soon) The part where they made fun of their rep was the best, IMO. Link to comment
Guest Until The End Of Time
To me the best part of the whole movie was the part when Neve was on stage dancing with that guy even though it was raining lighting and thundering and the leaves were blowing around. THAT WAS POETRY right there. it was beautiful and amazing. two thumbs up Link to comment
Swanilda
I guess I'm different, I actually just finished watching it and thought it was SO boring. I agree, I love the dance sequences (of course), but there was NO plot. If they wanted to do a documentary (which I think was the aim), there should have been more dancing. I have the dvd, which is cool because I love the special feature that shows them all in class (Studio A or something like that). Just my opinion! I'm a huge Joffrey fan, though, and anything that has to do with Maia Wilkins is a good thing! Link to comment
Hjete
I agree, Swanilda. The film really didn't seem to have any cohesiveness to me. I enjoyed most of the dancing, but I doubt the movie would have kept my attention if I weren't a dancer. Still, it was fun to peek into the professional world a bit...dance films are great IMO, even if they aren't stellar works of cinematography. Link to comment
Mel Johnson
But that's Altman for you. Chaos worked brilliantly well to serve M*A*S*H, but has worked against some of his other films. Link to comment
Guest baby_carrot
My favorite part was the dance with the little swing thing. The music and the choreography and the lighting, sheesh, it almost made me cry. Link to comment
Dolphingirl
It's even more beautiful when you see it performed live! The Joffrey's program this Spring was "Favorites from The Company" and they showed several of the pieces, along with several pieces that were not in the movie. One piece that is not given justice in the movie is Creative Force. Much better all the way through (it's much longer than on the movie) and seen from afar. Fairly simple steps, but cool patterns, and somewhat difficult to execute, with lots of almost-crashes, and other things. I've seen the movie 4 times now. The first 3 times, it just kept getting better. Now I find myself getting more and more sick of the entirely non-dance scenes, though I like the dance scenes more and more each time I see them. I live in Chicago, and I've danced with these dancers in Nutcracker, had master classes from them (including Ms. Wilkins, who is a great teacher as well as amazing dancer), seen all their shows for the past several years, and run into them occationally. The movie felt very personal to me- I know all the locations, and can even tell you that the box Mr. A sits in when watching "Blue Snake" is not only not his "personal box" but on the opposite side of the theater! I think everyone should see this movie, if only for the gorgeous dancing! Link to comment
