heels turning in

Giselle

Recommended Posts

WHen en pointe, I've been having a little trouble with my echappes (spelling?). My legs are pretty much remaining turned out, but my heels kind of drop back and don;t hold full turn out. My teacher thought the problem might be stemming from my tendus to the side. I have been practicing at home and focusing on keeping my heel forward during the entire tendu at class. IT seems to be helping some, but any other suggestions?

thanks!

Without actually seeing it Giselle, it is difficult to tell you exactly what the problem may be! Does your teacher tell you that you sickle your feet in your tendus to the side? If this is the case, then indeed your heels will not be forward in echappe either! Practice your tendus feeling the center of your feet through the middle toe. Try to draw the line outward with the first three toes. Of course you want all five toes on the floor when you are standing on pointe but, if you emphasis the outside of your foot too much you will sickle your feet? Also practicing keeping your ankles straight in releves will help to strengthen your ankles to hold your feet straight. Out of interest, how long have you been studying pointe work and how long are your pointe classes?

Also when you stand on the whole foot flat on the ground make sure you are not rolling to the outside of your foot/feet. Make sure you feel the turn out of the whole leg from the floor up into the hip socket. Often students who sickle their feet do not stand placed properly with the weight over the feet.

I take about 2hrs 15min of pointe a week (3 days a week- one day I get 30 min, another 45 min, and on Saturdays, an hour) Its difficult to explain. In my tendus, my feet do not begin or end sickeled (spelling?) There is an odd spot in the middle where they start to for half a second and then I fix it. Its something I have recently realized. My heels aren't dropped back a lot and I'm not really sickeling much either. (I'm not sure if dropping back is the right wording here. Its not a sickeled posistion. My heels are just slightly turned in) Its really not drastic. I've just noticed that my eschappes were looking a little odd, so I asked my teacher about it. She told my heels were not all the way turned out. It's not an awful problem, I just want to make it perfect! :wallbash:

thanks!

Giselle, are your calf muscles and lower leg turned out with your upper leg? If you are standing straight on your feet and your legs are rotated completely from the upper leg in your hip sockets, that leaves the lower leg! I would have to say go to your teacher for extra help to turn your heels more forward. Perhaps, since she can actually see you, she would be the one to explain in greater detail how you can accomplish her correction to turn you heels more forward! :wallbash:
