mini cooper
A couple of us have been communicating on the CPYB Si thread. We all hoped we would meet up at check in activities. In the back of my mind I wondered, how will we ever meet - there are so many dk's, parents, and siblings, how will we ever find each other. As it turns out, at the oreintation meeting held in the theatre where the performances were held, we found three empty seats in a row of 5 seats. We had to climb over the people who were already in the two seats that were taken. My husband sat next to them, and within a very short period of time we figured out that we knew each other from BA. This ballet world is so small, and it is nice to put names and faces with folks we've met here. I know many of you have similar stories. mc Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
I wonder if we could design some sort of "Ballet Alert" pin, or rosette, or something distinctive to mark us discreetly for purposes of identification. Not necessarily with the name "Ballet Alert" on it, but something in the way of dominant board colors. Hmm...black and blue...hmmm. Quote Link to comment
LadyR
Maybe it could be like a charm pin. We could add different charms that represent milestones. You know, dd get's first pointe shoes, first summer intensive.... Quote Link to comment
mini cooper
Absolutely - of course then you could end up with the safety issues we all worry about for our kids. Maybe a secret hand shake? mc Quote Link to comment
BW
I remember the first time several of us met at Lincoln Center, near the reflecting pool, in order to meet up before the ABT NYC's end of the SI performance...ah, the good old days with PAmom, dancermom2, vagansmom, Missy...and I think we did this last year too, but chose the fountain - ajg, tango49 and a few others were there as well. It was rather strange the first time we did it...we sort of looked at each other and seemed to just know. I have met some wonderful people thanks to Ballet Talk and am still in touch with some even outside of ballet, now. As a matter of fact I just got a phone call from a mother I met, what 4 years ago?, at a Nutmeg SI audition...she called to find out the best way to get into Manhattan for an upcoming ABT performance (she lives about 10 hours from here)! Glad to hear people are continuing the process of connection all over the place. Quote Link to comment
Dave
It's starting to sound like a college fraternity/sorority...secret handshakes, passwords and countersigns to recognize each other in a crowd, and pins with little charms representing accomplishments. (I wonder where my pin IS? It was SO important, once upon a time.) Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
I don't think that it has to reach the "Skull and Bones" sort of elitism, but it would be nice if we had a uniform, discreet form of recognition that would make us recognizable to one another. Gee, maybe we need a Ballet Alert! Online coffee break, a custom gathered from the Citizen's Band radio craze. Whatever form of recognition we use, it has to be unisex, as I don't think I want to start wearing a charm bracelet. Maybe an enameled pin or something. Quote Link to comment
syr
Let' see - enamel pin with cartoonish very wide eyed (Alert!) ballet dancer? Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
That has merit. I think I'll work on it. Quote Link to comment
balletbooster
I think Syr's idea is great! If someone can draw and create the graphic, then it could be posted here and anyone who was interested could download it and print it on a sticker on their Word program and wear it proudly to all ballet gatherings! mini cooper
Actually, my husband and I were thinking exactly that - something we could download when needed. My dd joked that next time she would alert whoever she is trying to meet up with about my husband's gray, curly hair. It's very distinctive and quite noticeable in a crowd! Quote Link to comment
Guest PAmom
If BW and folks remember, I used the "Ballet Talk" logo as name tags that first time we met before the SI performance (3 summers ago!). Are folks wanting a graphic other than that? My husband is a graphic artist and I dabble so we could throw a design out too. It might make it more fun than folks looking for my purple hair as my identifier. Quote Link to comment
Mel Johnson
I think all who are interested could work on this casually, and come up with a neat-looking design. Quote Link to comment
BW
Right, PAmom! I'd forgotten about those nametags...but did we actually get them ahead of time? I can't remember! On the other hand, I do remember that strand of purple hair. Balletbooster - great idea about being able to download it! (Did we do this three years ago, PAmom? My senility is setting in.) Taradriver
Great idea! As I am going to dd's demo day quite soon, I'd LOVE to meet other BA parents. Hope this gets decided before July 8th! If not, you'll recognize me by my red eyes (from the flight), empty wallet (from class after class after class) and Ben-Gay perfume (it is always in my purse). Quote Link to comment
