Spot Turns...

Hi all,

Just a quick question!

When I spot whilst doing a pirouette I get really really dizzy, does this mean I am not doing it right?

It can. A spot for a single pirouette isn't that hard and shouldn't stir up the balance mechanisms in the middle and inner ear. It could be a symptom of some physical problem, too, like an infection or allergic reaction involving those structures.

Oh right, oh dear.... well maybe I should go for an ear checkup! Its going to be a problem when I come to doing doubles or triples! :(

Mr. Johnson,

You mentioned that a spot on a single pirouette should not disrupt internal balance mechanisms, which makes sense...but what about repetitive turns across the floor, such as piques, soutenus, or chainees? I have no trouble with dizziness when spotting single, double, or triple pirouettes, but turns across the floor make me incredibly dizzy. :dizzy: I'm trying my darndest to spot correctly, but perhaps I'm still not snapping my head quickly enough? What do you think?

Thanks,

Jamie

Jamie, is you don't get dizzy on multiple pirouettes, there is no reason it should happen during diagonal turns unless you are just not getting your body around far enough for the head to get where it needs to be. Are you spotting where you are going, and are you getting your shoulders all the way around to where you are going? If the body is holding back even a tiny bit and not getting all the way around the corner, the spot doesn't work.

Ms. Leigh,

Thank you for your suggestions. In all the time I've been trying to perfect my spotting, I've been focusing so much on my head and not enough on my shoulders! I will be sure to pay attention to whether or not I'm using my shoulders correctly during my next class. I have a feeling that, although I'm spotting to the corner toward which I'm travelling, my body and my head aren't working in synch.

Thanks again!

Jamie

PS - I just realized that this thread is part of the 17-22 forum, and I'm just a bit older than that (25). I apologize for posting in the wrong place...I'm still new to this! Please feel free to delete my posts from this thread if necessary.

That's okay, Jamie. We understand this happens sometimes :dizzy:
