Guest Dancr6788
(I assume this is in the wrong section... i just could not figure out where to post it so if you could please move it to the correct section i would be really greatful...sry for the inconveinience) Im going into my junoir year of high school and i need to decided which company i would liek to join. im going to audition for basically everything and anything but i was specifically wondering about two. NYCB seems very interesting. I wasnt trained in Balanchine though so it would be a little harder for me. Another thing i worry about is do they do classics...i would really like to do things like sleeping beauty and giselle and swan lake(my favorite). I have also begun to consider Boston Ballet beacuase i know they have a good balance of classical and contemporary works and they seem to be strong... the problem is ive never seen them perform . basically im asking for information about these two companies. If you know anything about either of these companies or both im sure it would help. Thank you! Link to comment
vrsfanatic
This is a perfect time for you to begin making plans for your future. You may find it helpful to audition for both SAB and the Boston SIs for next summer. In this way you would have first hand experience with their methods of training. You could also plan to visit both NYC and Boston for a weekend while the companies are performing sometime during their seasons so you would be able to view the companies personally. Also begin to read all of the reviews you can find and articles that are written about the companies so you are able to become more familiar with their repertoire. Many are included on Ballet Talk in the links forum. If you go to their websites online you can also receive their marketing updates. Also talk with your teachers and your Director to see if they have any helpful hints or suggestions! Merde! Link to comment
Guest Dancr6788
thanks! that advice was really helpful. im fortunate to live in NY so i can see NYCB pretty much anytime. I talked to my dad and he said we could go to see boston this year. Audtioning for there SI's is a good idea. even if i dont go to the program or dont get in i'll have a taste of it. Link to comment
Swanilda
If you've been to NYCB performances and read the program, you'll notice that all their dancers went to SAB. I don't know of any circumstances where an entry level dancer was taken from anywhere else. Boston holds open auditions, however you should realize that these are two of the top companies in the US. Pretty much ALL dancers would love to join one of them. Not saying to give up, but you might look at some others as well. Link to comment

Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted August 7, 2004 Administrators Report Share Posted August 7, 2004 Time to start researching the websites of the various companies, dancers! Very easy to find which companies do the classics and which do not, or do not do very many. NYCB is not known for it's classics, although they have a very fine Nutcracker production. ABT, Boston and Houston do a LOT of classics. They also have contemporary and neo-classic works, but I would say far more classics than most companies. Most of the other companies are mixed, with a few classics, and more contemporary and neo-classic (Balanchine, Robbins, Duarto, Martins, Forsythe, Tharp, etc.) Link to comment
