placement classes?

Last night when I was changing for ballet, there was a man talking to me, and he said I should take a "placement class" because it would really help me get ahead. I understood that placement classes were just meant for "placing" you in the right class, but he was talking about it in regards to correct placement of your shoulders, hips, etc. I'm confused, and is he right? Should I take a placement class?

Yes, a body placement/alignment class would be very beneficial for a beginning student.

Not sure, maksimate. Not a lot of school offer them, although it would be really good if they did!

Knock Knock... I am a mom so hope it's ok to post.

Maksimate, I see you are in NYC (sometimes). I don't know where you take class, but, if you can get to Broadway Dance Center there is a great teacher there that works on placement issues.

You can take Dorit Koppel's Basic Ballet class (you can check the website for her bio and class schedules). Just let Dorit know before class that you are there for placement/alignment issues. The class moves slow and is very beneficial. Dorit is an amazing teacher and has helped my dd a great deal. Good luck , hope this helps.

maksimate,

In addition to ballet class, you may be interested in a floor barre class. The one I take is at STEPS and is taught by Emilietta Ettlin (there is a substitute for the next couple of weeks and she's wonderful as well and very open to questions). This class specifically works on aligning your hips correctly and also helps you build strength VERY quickly (it's quite a workout!) We also stand up and do some simple releves and developpes, so you can immediately apply what you're learning on the floor. I've seen a lot of beginners who progress quite well when they take this floor barre class. If you took it a few times, you'd learn a lot.
