Hey guys!

Im new here and wanted to get your opinion. I just turned 16 and have been dancing for a little over 4 years. For years now I have had a passion to do ballet. I never have (which still amazes me). I now finally have a chance to start it up. However, I don't know if it would just be a waste because I'm too old. I know some people say age does matter and others say it doesnt. I am just curious if anyone can maybe steer me in the right direction. Thanks a bunch!!

Hi Keri, and welcome to Ballet Talk for Dancers! :(

It's never a waste of time to start your ballet training. However, you do need to know that the options for a career in classical ballet, starting at 16, are not terrific. It may have been done, in exceptional cases by a few very rare individuals, but it is not the norm. However, since you have been dancing for 4 years, it's possible that, IF you have an exceptional physical facility for ballet, you could do very well. No one can ever say whether anyone will or will not have a career in the professional world, but if it is a passion and you really want to do it, then do it! Don't go into it thinking that is how you will make your living as an adult, but for the purpose of studying it and learning to dance in the classical technique, and see how it goes. You have nothing to lose, and could have a lot gain. And, it will make all your other dance forms that much better! :)

I think you should do it, no matter how old you are. If you have a passion for ballet, and you have the oppurtunity to dance, what are you waiting for? If you have a love for ballet, age and technique won't matter. Best of Luck! :D
