Hi!

I was just woundering how much you should improve each year. I'm 14, what sort of things should I master by the end of the year, or to make it into a good SI. Any advice would be helpful!

That's a very difficult question to answer. I just reviewed your previous posts, and nowhere in there do you tell us where you are now, how often you take class, how long the classes are, and so forth. It's like the great Norwegian skier Torger Tokel used to ask, "How can ya YOOMP when ya got no place to STOOD?"

It doesn't quite work that way in many schools, though. In schools without a graded syllabus like RAD, the levels may be quite different and the rate of advancement also different. Our early level students, for instance, move from Level 1A to 1B, or from 1B to 1C, and the 1C will move to 2A, etc. There are several levels of ones and twos and even threes and fours. By five there is only one section, the same for 6, and then it becomes Release Time B and finally release time A. The Release Time classes are like Levels 7 and 8. But students may be in 4 or 5 or 6 for more than a year, and some never make it to 7 or 8.

Hi!

Your right, I really didn't give you many details about my level in dance. Well, I am at the intermediate-intermediate advanced level and I'm 14. I got to class 5 days a week and have rehersals four days per week. My studio that i come from is not the best place to go if you want to become a proffesional (like myself), but there are no other better places to go in my area. I hope this information helps!

Okay, balletdancer406, I think the answer to at least part of your question, how to make it into a good SI, would be to study at a good school. If there is not one in your immediate area, you might need to travel a bit. Have you thought of auditioning for a school like Nutmeg Academy? Since you live in CT., it might be within commuting distance, but if not, you might be able to become a full time student there.

We can't tell you about your progression or what you should accomplish this year, since we can't see you and have no idea what you have already accomplished. Intermediate and even Advanced classes in one school may not be at all the same in another school. If your school is not a serious ballet school that has produced dancers in the past, and where their advanced dancers are regularly accepted to good SI programs, and you want a career in ballet, then you will need to get to a serious school ASAP, preferably yesterday!

yes, I have thought about going to Nutmeg but its 40 minutes one way and i still have homework and its not fair to my mom to have to drive me there everyday because we have a lot of kids in our family who all deserve equal attention, it can't just be focused on me. I wish i could go there but it just doesn't seem to be an option, I have already talked to my mom about it :D . Thanks for the help though!

Dancer, while you were posting I was adding on to my post. Please read that. I'm sorry, but 40 minutes is really not a lot in today's world. Most of our students travel at least that long, and a high percentage travel a lot longer than that.

Balletdancer406 - Trust me, it's not that bad. It seems like forever, but the drives are never that bad. It takes me about an hour to drive out to class, even on the H.O.V. lane, but only about 30 minutes on the way back. You can do homework and all of that in the car - it works out better than you'd think that it would. Listen to music, do mathematics homework - the time really isn't all that bad.

Your mom might not object to it, either, if you word it properly, and make sure that you make an effort to cooperate with her at other times. Because, I mean, yes, it is definitely a large time commitment on their part, but usually it's one that they are willing to take if you make sure to act mature. :D

40 minutes drive to a professional school is not bad at all. i drive that much to the best school in my area, and its still not enough for me. if this is what you really want to do with your life you need to tell your mom that. maybe you could carpool with a friend or two?

It takes me 40-45 minutes to get to the New Jersey School of Ballet (home of the New Jersey Ballet) and believe me it's not hard at all. It's totally worth it!

I agree! I ride in the car for an two hours to ballet everyday (one hr. each way). It is easier because we carpool with people who live in my town. If you make good use of your time in the car, it can work. There is a post in the mom and dad's forum called making the drive work, I think. If you want to get good instruction to become a professional dancer, I think you should go to the best studio in your area. :grinning: It will be a big time commitment for your mom. But if you talk to your siblings and parents about your dreams and how important this is to you, they will probably understand. Give it a shot!

I drive about a 1/2 hour, give or take a few minutes with traffic. I hate riding in the car, but it doesn't seem that bad because I carpool with my friend, and I guess it isn't really that bad compared to some of you guys. :grinning:

TomarkenFan89- Is the New Jersey School of Ballet in North or South Jersey?... Just curious, because I live in Jersey too.

It's in Livingston (20-25 mins away from Millburn), which is in Central Jersey.

Actually Livingston is still considered North Jersey, although it is a bit West. It it about 20-30 miles west of Manhattan.
