ami1436
Hello friends, Does anyone here use Bunhead's Big Tip or jelly tips? I love the protection they give to my toes (especially my big toe) but *hate* how quickly they tear.... any ideas to make these items longer-lasting? Ami Quote Link to comment
Tiffany
I've tried them but I don't use them currently; it seemed to help if I cut my toe nails as short as possible, but you've probably already thought of that. Quote Link to comment
Sulan
Use tape over your toe nail before putting the jelly tips on. Quote Link to comment
Dance_Scholar_London
Ami, how long do they last? I have mine for about 6 months and use them 3 times a week and they still seem to work... Quote Link to comment
skip
my big tips were already gone after one intensive pointeclass. what i use now, is a jelly toe cut in half and put on the nail of my big toe with a little bit sticking out so that the tip of my big toe is protected. i really need some protection there and tried a lot of things, also taping, but taping it like my other toes is no option, cause if i do that, my nail turns blue .....but this is the best solution for me so far. hope this helps you a little! ~SKIP~ Quote Link to comment
Dance_Scholar_London
my big tips were already gone after one intensive pointeclass. How long are your toe nails? I think this might be the problem, otherwise I cant imagine why they just last for one class (which could get quite expensive over time) Quote Link to comment
skip
my toenails are short, always when i do pointe! problem is, i think, is that my big toe is the longest......but the solution i gave earlier helps me very well and the jelly toes last longer! ~SKIP~ Quote Link to comment
ami1436
Hi all, thanks for your replies. I have very tapered toes, but also really broad toe nail beds. I keep my nails as short as possible, but probably not as short as most other pointe shoe-wearers do, as I've had a problem with an ingrown nail before (a short, mini-surgery about 2 weeks before we performed Sleeping Beauty scared me senseless!!!!!). I'm following doctor's orders on where to cut my nails and how to protect them, and since then have had no problems (touch wood!), but am getting sick of how expensive the jelly tips/big tips are! Skip, I don't know if the jelly toe would actually fit on my big toe! I've seen only the narrow versions? Since I've noticed this problem I do tape across my toe nail, but it doesn't always help - I think some of the rubbing/pressure just tends to deplete the gel and/or outside fabric somehow? The jelly tips/big tips last for varied period of time - anywhere from a month to 6 months I guess.... I really like them as they pad just the areas I need, but again, the expense is driving me crazy! Thanks again, Ami Quote Link to comment
lampwick
ami, I wonder if your pointe shoes have an abrasive interior surface and if there's any way to smooth them at all. Maybe a shellac or something? Just a brainstorm... Quote Link to comment
Dance_Scholar_London
I think Shellack makes the surface even more rough. At least when you have a "Shellack pool" in your pointe as the material tends to crack then when the shoe is moving... Quote Link to comment
ami1436
I checked my pointe shoes last night, and no, they don't seem rough. I should add that this happens no matter what type of shoe I'm wearing. On top of taped/jelly tip-covered toes, I have my tights, and on top of that a very very thin and old matted lambswool toe pad. I think I just might experiment with a way to add a lining on the inside of the tips, or make a little toe sock to put on before the tips, and see if that helps. Quote Link to comment
onyx
i have the same problem- with me they rip after 1 class, and I wear the really big tips. what I have been doing, and I don't know if it is a good idea or not because it might hinder feeling the floor, but I don't think so, is put one of those little jelly pad toe savers( they are pink and blue or purple) in the jelly toe. I'm even using it wear the rips are. It seems to give me enough padding that way. I also have had big problems with ingrown toenails and pain on the side of the pig toenail. Sometimes it think the little pad may shift to the outside of the nail and that is what protects the outside corner. My toenails are short but very thick- lately, I have asked my podiatrist to shave to shave down the nail to make it thinner , which think helps a little, but I am still afraid to wear the jelly toes alone. dancepig
I don't want to appear obtuse But have any of you tried lambs wool, between the jelly tip, any gel pads or any other padding and your toe(s)? I use a very small amount of lambs wool between my toes and the gel pads (I use gellows pillows for pointe) and it made a world of difference, especially since the lambs wool keeps my feet from sweating Quote Link to comment
