Guest DerfDude04
I was just wondering if anyone knows any information about the men's classes/schedule in Houston from first or second-hand information. There is alot posted on the site about girls, but not so much about boys. I am considering HBA for summer 2005, so I was just wondering about the SI. Even information about the SI in general would be useful. I have also posted in the Men's forum but I thought I would try here too. Quote Link to comment
DaNcErKeL86
Houston is an AWESOME place for guys! I was at Houston for the summer and also started out my year at their academy and I can tell you that they focus on the men alot. Claudio Munoz, who is the Principal Instructor and head of HB II, is really good with the guys. If your in doubt about going there, I would highly recomend it! Hope this helped a little. Let me know if you have any more specific questions and I'll try to answer. Quote Link to comment
Guest DerfDude04
Hey "Dancerkel"! Thanks for replying!! Where else have you been for summer? Does Houston compare/stand out for any particular reason? What level were you in this past summer? What level are in you in for the year? Guys and girls are in the same classes right? Is there any possible way to stay at year-round without staying in the townhouses? Woah, sorry for all the questions!! Quote Link to comment
DaNcErKeL86
Other places I have been for the summer are Joffrey San Antonio and Harid. The guys at Houston are one of the things that makes it stand out. They are awesome! Also the new director of Houston Ballet, Stanton Welch, does some awesome stuff with choreography and the company. I was in 7 for the summer and 7/8 for the year. No if you have somewhere else you want to live, like with a relative or friend, then you don't have to live in the town houses, although they are super nice! Quote Link to comment
Guest DerfDude04
Thanks for replying again:D, but do you know what levels he worked on with choreographing. I read somewhere on the site that they taught choreographing in the summer program. Did Stanton Welsch teach that also? Also, does Houston compare to Harid? Would you say its just as good if not better/worse? Or just extremely different? I know that Harid is strict Vaganova Russian, whereas Houston is more towards the Australian Ballet's and Royal Ballet's style (RAD). Is the style strictly enforced at HBA, or are they more mixed/lenient. Like are the specific about fourth pirouette preporations? Such as fourth with two bent knees opposed to a fourth with one bent and one straight (Balanchine approach). For year-round are you allowed to get your own appartment outside of the townhouses? Sorry if I'm being such a pain , I'm just extremely interested for Houston for next summer and possibly year. Quote Link to comment
DaNcErKeL86
Stanton works with all the levels, even the tiny, little kids! He choreographs the end of year performance. During the summer there were student choreographers. It was sort of on a volunteer basis. Stanton did work with them a couple times. In my opinion, Houston is alot different from Harid, especially now with Stanton taking over. There are definatley some mixed stlyes at HB, but not in a bad way. I would say that each teacher has their own preference about tyour back leg for turns, but for the most part, you can just do whatever works for you. And yes you can get your own apartment outside of the townhouses but I think you have to be a certain age. I do know that a lot of the guys have their own place but I think they are all at least 18. Let me know if you have more questions! Quote Link to comment
Guest DerfDude04
Thank you so much for replying...however, isn't the town houses for like 12 select students? Quote Link to comment
DaNcErKeL86
Yes, there are six guys and six girls. Quote Link to comment
Guest DerfDude04
And they only permit 18+ yearolds to live in appartments on their own? Or would a 16-17 year old be able to? Sorry for all the questions. Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted November 19, 2004 Administrators Report Share Posted November 19, 2004 I'm not sure of their rules, but I would strongly suspect that anyone under 18 would not be allowed to live on their own. If not prohibited by the school, then it should be by the parents! Quote Link to comment
DaNcErKeL86
Yeah I don't know of anyone under 18 who lives on their own.....sorry! But if you get accepted for the year and your from out of town, then they will most likely offer you a spot in the town houses so I wouldn't worry. They are really nice too. Quote Link to comment
Guest DerfDude04
Hmmm, not if there is only 6 spots for boys. I'm not THAT good. Wait, do you have to be in Level 8 to attend year-round? Quote Link to comment
DaNcErKeL86
No you don't have to be in level 8 to stay in the town houses year round. Quote Link to comment
