I don't know of any one book that covers both history and technique, Emily. There are books on history, and there are books on different methods of teaching ballet, and there are technique ("how to") books.

The best overall book for dancers in terms of explaining the technique of ballet is Classical Ballet Technique, by Gretchen Ward Warren. It is available through Amazon.com (by clicking on the lbanner at the top of all Ballet Alert Pages! ) and usually in Borders and Barnes and Noble too.

There is an EVERYTHING for Dummies book.

It doesn't appear that there is a "Complete Idiots Guide to Ballet" or a "Everything Ballet Book" the other two companies who seem to market how to books on everything.

OFF TOPIC but as I searched for the Ballet How To books I found out you could buy pointe shoes, tights and a barres on amazon.com. What can't you buy there?

Who knew?! So if we click on the banner and buy our tights through amazon, ballet talk gets a contribution? Cool. :)
