Guest justthedriver
This is one of those doofy yet vital questions from the amateur circles; what is the appropriate opening night offering for a guy? First nutcracker, multiple small roles, you know the drill. Anyone have any brilliant ideas for a gift? Somehow I can't feature flowers. He'd probably throw them at me. Presumably you've trod this ground ahead of me, so I'd appreciate any brilliant notions. Quote Link to comment

Dance_Scholar_London
What about a ballet book of famous male dancers... Quote Link to comment
Guest justthedriver
Gentlemen, excellent ideas both - and indeed, why not both? I just ordered a book about his idol, Baryshnikov; strap that puppy to a box of chocolates and we got ourselves a winner. Quote Link to comment
Guest PAmom
There was a topic a while ago, Dance Show, that touched on the flowers for guys topic. There were quite a few ideas thrown around for alternate gifts. I will stand by what I said then, my son still gets flowers and enjoys them before he has to catch a flight or train if he is touring. If it's at a local performance, he takes them with him. I send flowers to his dressing room and he says he is glad to be thought of. Other fellows in the company also get flowers. I prefer to send a small gift that goes with the theme of his role. I sent him a Mickey Mouse Sorcerer's Apprentice ornament when he was the Apprentice, I sent him a pair of warm up pants with flames on the cuffs when he was "Ring of Fire" in Kirk Peterson's Native America themed Nutcracker. A candy cane in a hoop shape worked the years he was in a Balanchine Nutcracker Russian lead. The Nutcracker he is in this year he dances a Kachina & Pioneer. Anyone have a quick resource for a faux coon-tailed cap that I could throw some holly on? t Quote Link to comment
Treefrog
Ask and ye shall receive! Here's a source for all types of raccoon hats -- real ones, rabbit fur ones, and faux fur ones. Quote Link to comment
Guest justthedriver
PAMom, you've got too much time on your hands! Please come help me finish my Christmas shopping. Seriously, you're good at this. I did see a faux Dan'l Boone hat for sale in a toy catalogue - HEARTHSONG, I think, which I just tried and failed to unearth. But they're probably on the net. I HAVE seen some incredibly cunning Kachina ornaments for sale in the Southwest, and I bet you could score one of those online - maybe the Grand Canyon gift shop, or something like? Your son sounds as though he's enjoying a lovely career. Kudos to him, and his thoughtful mama. Quote Link to comment
Guest PAmom
PAMom, you've got too much time on your hands! My mom says that too me all the time!!! Thanks Treefrog, the cap link is AWESOME! I did get it but don't want to have to order a minimum of 3 faux caps to meet their minumum order. I also checked out the HearthSong link and wanted to add it here since it had so many wonderful dress up options for young fellows. Eventually, they leave the wooden play swords behind... to start to collect REAL ones! My son is obsessed with katanas. Another plant option we have given, mentioned on the other topic, are bonsai trees. Ficus are a good starter tree for those wth less of a green thumb. Off to shop for kachinas... t Quote Link to comment
Treefrog
Oops, I didn't see that minimum order clause. Too bad! Maybe you can find someone else who wants a coonskin cap or two? Quote Link to comment
dancemomCA
I've given son flowers, candy, Nutcracker ornaments, cards, (I send him cards for no real reason except to say hi and I miss you!). I take him out for post-performance dinners and/or dessert (very much appreciated on his dessert-restricted meal plan!). As for the fur coon hat - I have ordered my oldest son a fur-lined wool cap with ear flaps from the Winnipeg Fur Trading Association (Canada). Need to find link if at all possible. Cheers! tsavoie
My dad has gotten my son small nutcrakers each year dressed as close to his role as possible. This past year he fianlly reached the part of Prince Cavalier and received his first large nutcracker. We have now a collection of mice, snow, tea, etc designs. It was a neat idea for a grandfather that really doesn't much care for ballet. Quote Link to comment
Guest justthedriver
DancemomCA, it took me far too long to realize that CA stood for Canda, not California - like, DUH, I'm originally from California, and I couldn't figure out WHY your son would want that odd yet probably devastatingly ironic flappy eared hat... At this point, heading into finals, tech week and four other school arts activities all amazing scheduled for the same exact week - is this harmonic convergence with a vengence or what? Can't wait for Christmas, so I can get some rest. So bottom line is, little dancin' man is lucky to get that Mischa book. I'll probably eat the chocolates myself; I think it's called "self medicating" in the trade. AND available without a prescription...Thanks, y'all. Quote Link to comment
