On tape, Baryshnikov amazes me (and Im sure he would even more if I had seen him live). But out of who I have seen live, I really liked Jose Manuel Carreno. :)

In my opinion, Baryshnikov is without a question the best male dancer ever to live. I, like all people, am impressed by his flawless technique, perfect pirouettes, and amazing jumps, but that's still not the thing I really love about his dancing.

When I watch him dance, no matter what ballet it is, I feel as if he is dancing in another dimension. It's as if every move he makes has its own, important meaning that he puts into it. He has an amazing control over and respect for space, and I find this very intriguing. Now that I'm thinking about it, it's really difficult to describe what I'm talking about. There's just something about Baryshnikov.

CARLOS ACOSTA!!!!

Other dancers I really like are ABT's Herman Cornejo and David Hallberg, and Cubans Yoel Carreno and Rolando Sarabia. I saw a video of Sarabia do 7 turns in second and pull in and do 17 perfectly centered pirouettes.

I also really like Tetsuya Kumakawa of Japan's K-Ballet. He can do just about anything that's requested of him. He can do 540's like they're nothing, pull off 20 pirouettes whenever he wants (6 or 7 in a la second), and cabriole with his legs better than I can do with my arms. Wow.

The only videos I saw of Bruhn were the complete Bell Telephone Hour performances of him and Nureyev, and Giselle with Fracci.

I thought he was good in the BTH performances, but I didn't really like how the pieces he and Nureyev did were conceived for tv. They seemed cheap and somewhat corny, but I guess the show's producers were just trying to make them look flashy or some thing.

I really liked Bruhn in Giselle. I found that he had a lot of emotional depth as Albrecht compared to most other dancers I have seen in the role. It was also pretty cool when he did the 32 entre chat six without putting any strain in his arms or upper body.

Live, he was a whole other animal. And the same goes for Yuri Soloviev of the Kirov. Baryshnikov at his best equalled him, but no one I've seen has ever bettered him.

i agree re: misha. I saw him last year here in Scottsdale, AZ, from Row 2 center. He was within 6' of me at times. The thing that is so amazing about misha is that he could just go stand at center stage and do nothing and you still wouldn't be able to pull your eyes off him.

re: David Hallberg. He's from here in Phoenix. A few months ago, i took some classes with him at Ballet ARizona. Ohmigooooooodness. he's the nicest guy; gave me a few pointers on my cabrioles and how to link some steps together. Most fo time during calss, i'd be watching him thinking, "oh, so THAT'S what it's supposed to look like."

This past winter, i was lucky enough to be able to watch Miami City Ballet's company class. during the men's parts, there was this cuban guy (forget his name now) who was a soloist, but stood out from teh rest in his viruosity. SOme of the other guys had nicer pirouettes (Luis, mischa) but this guy had just huge double tours and beauteous double cabrioles. During teh COPPELIA performance, Carlos Miguel was amazing and performed as Franz just divinely; this combination of mime/acting, charisma/stage presence, and technical dancing just blew me away.

Angel Corrella :) he was so wonderful in Le Corsaire. He is the first really good male dancer that I have ever seen live.

I also really like Barishnikov and a few others.

For the recent dancers, Sascha Radetsky and Angel Corella, (ok well it doesnt help that they are cute :blushing: ) but, Baryshnikov of course is AWESOME!

My favourite mal dancers are Roberto Bolle and Françoise Petit. I have only seen Françoise Petit live on stage and he is just a great dancer. He dances since a long time with the Zürcher Ballett (in Heinz Spoerlis Company) and he teaches also there Pas de Deux (my balletteacher has seen him and she told me that he would also be a wonderful person) He is Petit and he is a very good comedian.

Then I like Roberto Bolle, I have seen nearly every available picture of him and a couple of clips and videos. He seems to be a very good dancer with an amazing expression. This automn I will have the possibility to go to La Scala and see him live perform.

I enjoyed reading Mr. Johnson's posts regarding Erik Bruhn, "the dancer's dancer." Mel and I are the same generation, I suspect...My first child, Erik, was named after Mr. Bruhn. He was my idol growing up, and eventually I got to know him and study with him, which was absolutely wonderful for me. Presently, I also enjoy Angel Corella's dancing very much. There is a joy that shines from him when he dances.
