Alfhieballet
Does the program supply a list of things you need or should bring with you? Quote Link to comment

MaryKTX
Today our DD auditioned for the University of Arizona dance program. Overall, it was an extremely positive experience. They offered an hour long tour of the dance department the day before the audition, and the facilities seem great, especially the 300 seat dance theater (dedicated space for the dance department). Our DD looked in on several classes and rehearsals and was impressed with the level of instruction and the excitement of the dancers. Today's audition included 75 women and 7 men, and was almost four hours long, starting with almost 2 hours of ballet, then an hour of modern, than of jazz. The entire dance faculty was present and taking detailed notes on scoresheets. Our DD enjoyed the class and felt like it gave her a good opportunity to show them what she could do. The faculty led an hour long question and answer session after the lengthy audition, and they came aross as very smart and caring and student-oriented. They spoke articulately about the goals and philosophy of the program, which they keep fairly small so they can provide a lot of individual attention and mentoring. They admit about 35 per year and typically see about 450 in auditions. This is a true triple track program in that they are seeking to train dancers at a high level in ballet, jazz, and modern. They said they are looking for "hungry movers" and dancers that catch the eye. Their recent graduates are working in a large number of prominent ballet and contemporary companies, and some on Broadway. The large university campus is attractive, seems full of happy students, and the honors college seems to offer a lot of extra stimulation and support but not overwhelming demands. Overall, DD liked everything she saw The faculty said to expect audition results in early December. Good luck to all who auditioned today, and to those who will audition in October and in February. millvillemurphs
MarKTX, thanks for the info. I looked at their website to see if they had an alumni listing and couldn't find one. Do you recall any specifics for which programs currently employ U of A alumni? Quote Link to comment
MaryKTX
Here is an impartial list hastily scrawled while the faculty member was speaking quickly: Houston Ballet, Las Vegas Ballet, Rochester Ballet, Ballet Austin, Tucson Ballet, Ballet Nuveau, City Ballet San Diego, plus lots of contemporary companies and Broadway shows. I hope this helps! Quote Link to comment
millvillemurphs
That does help. Thanks! Quote Link to comment
JSR1
Thank you for the information. My DD is auditioning next weekend during the Arizona Jazz Dance Showcase. According to the schedule they only have an hour and half allocated to the audition. There is a scholarship audition the day before which is 2 hours long and I wonder if the faculty will be observing the students at that audition as well. I will post after we get back. Good luck to everyone who auditioned and is auditioning in the future. Quote Link to comment
Mackie
My DD and I will be flying in for the Jazz Showcase next weekend. We plan to do the general campus tour and hopefully observe a ballet class Friday morning. She is a junior in high school and will attend the scholarship audition later on Friday. We thought this would be a great way to observe a UA performance, interact with their dance faculty in the showcase classes, and get a general feel for the campus before her senior year. We will be staying at the Aloft Hotel near campus. We are excited about the weekend!! Quote Link to comment
Lady Elle
so you can audition as a junior? Quote Link to comment
Mackie
She will be doing the scholarship audition on Friday offered through the Jazz Showcase, although she will not be old enough to take audition for admittance to the university on Saturday. That audition is for seniors only. The scholarship audition apparently gives students the chance to compete for scholarships to various summer intensives and conventions. All ages can take part in the scholarship audition. I hope that makes sense. Quote Link to comment

We will be staying at the Aloft Hotel near campus. We are excited about the weekend!! Hi We are staying at the Marriott and DD is a senior so she will do the school audition. I think she is going to do the scholarship one as well, though we have not talked about it. Senior year is so busy we barely see her. This weekend was homecoming not to mention papers, volunteer work and very little sleep. I am looking forward to the plane ride though I venture to bet she will sleep on the plane. We are flying to Phoenix and driving the rest of the way as there were no non stop flights from where we are to Tuscon. You are wise to do as much as you can your DD's junior year. Best of luck to your daughter. Quote Link to comment
Mackie
JSR1- Best wishes to your DD for a successful audition!! It does seem strange that the senior audition at the Showcase is so much shorter than the audition they held in September (1 1/2 hours vs. 4 hours!). Maybe the seniors that are auditioning wear some sort of number throughout the weekend so they can continue to watch them in the various classes? Please share your experience when you get back. When I called the dance office to see if we could observe a class on Friday morning, they said it would be an extremely busy and hectic weekend with a lot of dancers. I wonder how many dancers will be there? Based on the online research we have done so far, the University of Arizona is one of DD's top 4 schools for college. The dance program seems strong and competitive, and it is also possible to pursue a double major. I hope we like the program as much in person as we do online! Safe travels and best wishes!! JSR1
Mackie- thank you and the same to your daughter. Th college process is fun and very hectic. It's good that you are starting early. Double majoring is sloop important to our dd as is a University verses a conservatory.. Please say hello, I am easy to spot as I am a full time wheelchair user and there are probably not too many moms wheeling around. DH will be with us. I will defiantly post when we get back.
