cmemama
Arizona is indeed a very strong program and highly selective as many of the BFA programs are. Fortunately, U of A was not her first choice. Best of luck to all who are still waiting for results. Quote Link to comment
MaryKTX
DD was also not accepted. She was pretty disappointed because she felt like she had done a strong audition and she thought she had a chance, and this is a child who has many times accurately predicted audition results, both negative and positive. She has another acceptance to a strong dance program and is also pursuing other types of colleges so I am sure she will be fine in the long run. Good luck to all auditioning this year. balletmama1
DD got the rejection letter today as well. Very disappointed as she was very hopeful. She felt great about the ballet but not as strong in the other two styles (but not that bad where she felt she would be out of the running). Like MaryKTX said, there are many great programs and DD will find a place that's right for her. She'll just keep moving forward! Quote Link to comment
eugenia
Recently DD had the opportunity to perform Tarentella at UA, coached by Edward Villella. At the same performance they also performed Larry Keigwin's Megalopolis. Here is a link to the story on Arizona Public TV UA Dance School Showcases Father of American Ballet - Arizona Public Media. JSR1
We were out of town and just returned. DD also received a 2 page rejection letter. She expected it but was still disappointed. Luckily she recieved a scholarship to another school at the same time so that took the sting out a little. I would like to know what school others are considering. Not sure we can post that here but pm me if you can, no sure how that works either. Thanks. Quote Link to comment
MaryKTX
JSR1, I am sorry your DD did not get better news from AZ. I tried to message you but I don't think you have enough posts yet. I would encourage you to take a look at the Southern Methodist University thread for information about another true triple track program (ballet, jazz, modern) with a great track record of graduates working as professional dancers. cmemama
JSR sorry about U of A but wonderful to get a scholarship to another school on the same day! DD is hoping to stay west for college so it narrows the selection. She is also auditioning at Irvine, Chapman, Long Beach, LMU, SMU, Utah, Fullerton. Wish there was a good ballet/jazz program in Northern California! Anyone know of one? She wants a university setting not a performing arts school. Quote Link to comment
JSR1
Thanks for the support everyone. cmemama- DD is applying to some of the same schools. Irvine, Long Beach, LMU, UC Santa Barbara, USC, SDSU, UC SD Quote Link to comment
tutu2you
How about Dominican University in San Francisco? They used to have a program associated with Lines Ballet. My daughter auditioned for the Lines program several years ago. I believe she applied to Dominican first, and then set up an audition with Lines when she was in that part of the country. kiwiwdancer
I would say LINES/Dominican would not be a jazz/ballet program.Lines itself is ballet centered, contemporary ballet. Did a tour of Dominican this summer and spoke to a dance student, jazz not a focus. Quote Link to comment
dancemaven
Please keep this thread dedicated to University of Arizona. Discussions of other programs should go on the appropriate dedicated thread. More general discussions should go in the General Discussion Forum. Quote Link to comment
kiwiwdancer
DD auditioned this weekend. 140 in audition, the audition went almost 4 hours. DD loved it! This is her top choice but it is very competitive. They said they will take 30-35 out of the apprx. 450 total that audition by DVD or in person. They strongly suggested in-person audition. Barre was split into 2 groups, then they all came together for center combinations in ballet, jazz and modern. The information session afterward was impressive because the list of grads working in all areas of dance; Broadway, cruise lines, all levels of ballet companies, jazz, modern companies, Hollywood, professors, choreographers was impressive. They convene a committee last week of Feb to first week of March and decisions, including scholarships will be sent following their meeting. The audition was video taped as they all have been so far. They seem to have money to give scholarships and they pointed out that it was merit- based, the more merit, the more money a student will receive.Very impressive program. Quote Link to comment
kiwiwdancer
I want to add that the center combinations were performed in groups of 5, so DD really felt they got to see everyone. Quote Link to comment
kiwiwdancer
If anyone interested in a dance minor at U of A, they seem to have a different approach. After the audition, at the Q&A, they said only 7-8 minors are chosen each year for EACH discipline, ballet, jazz, modern. A student considering obtaining a minor in dance , must be very strong in one of the disciplines, for they will take high level classes with the majors, but only in the discipline for which they were accepted. The criteria for acceptance is the same as a major, but majors need to score highly in all three disciplines. They said if considering a dance minor to really consider it, because the rigor of the program is more time-consuming and more difficult than any other minor one might obtain at universities.
