Guest SunshineMC2004
I go to school in PA, but live in MD... I found a place at home where I can take some open classes when I am home over break... What should I expect? If there isn't a dress code, is there anything that would be more apporiate for me to wear to my first open class? Black leo, pink tights and ankle length pants? Link to comment
~dancer
has anyone be STEPS in NYC? I wanna take open classes there but idunno how they r Link to comment
Mel Johnson
Black leo, pink tights and ankle length pants? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> What's with the pants? For jazz, OK, but not for a ballet class at a school where they don't know you and you don't know their procedures. Link to comment

Do you mean are they two-headed monsters, or are they strict about dress for class, are they all typhoid carriers, but they're getting better? What? Link to comment
Guest LittleMissChievious
I would go with the normal pink tights and black leo, just in case they DO have a dress code, and bring the comfy extras, like warmups, etc. in case they don't. You could always call ahead and ask what their dress code is. Link to comment
Guest dancingstar32
I only take drop-in classes because, being in university, there are times when I cannot make class and then I am paying for classes I cannot attend. Open classes are great, and it's good to get experience with a variety of teachers. However, they can be very crowded (depending on the maximum allowance of dancers in the class) and they get repetitive after a while because they don't really advance with you, rather you advance when you feel you have a degree of mastery. I wanna take open classes there but idunno how they r <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Steps has some great open classes, in many different dance forms (I'm assuming you'll want to take a ballet class.) David Howard offers incredible ballet classes (intermediate advanced) , as does Fabrice Herrault. While you're there, take a floor barre, grytoniks, or pilates class. It will be well worth your effort, and you will probably find that you will have a better class if you take them before the ballet class. Also, many ABT, SAB, and NYCB dancers come to take class. Hope you have fun! Any other questions, just let me know. Link to comment
shulie
What is the age structure at an advanced beginners/ low intermediate ballet class at STEPS? Would I be dancing with 8 year old kids or is it mixed? Do the open classes at STEPS have any kind of dress code? Link to comment
lampwick
All the open classes at STEPS are for adults. Occasionally a child will take a class with prior permission, but they're 99% adults. For advanced Beginner/Intermediate, it'll probably be all adults, at all different ages. All different shapes and sizes. No dress code for open classes. Wear whatever you're comfortable in. Link to comment
shulie
Thank you! I am really relieved since I am not so crazy about the idea of taking classes with snobby pre pro 10 year olds . Link to comment
lampwick
Don't worry--you'll be comfortable at Steps. It's not scary. I will add that the young girls from SAB and other schools who occasionally take a class are very serious dance students. They are extremely well-behaved, quiet, focused, and talented.
