NutsaboutBallet
It's my understanding that ballet class is the best way to improve your arch. Have you spoken to your ballet teacher? Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted February 22, 2005 Administrators Report Share Posted February 22, 2005 Hello Jess! Welcome to Ballet Talk for Dancers. Yes, ballet is the best way to do that, but of course some extra work is necessary, although one does have to know HOW to work on the feet. Improving the instep and the arch is not something that can be done in a short time. It takes years, not weeks or months, and a great deal of diligence and patience. Learning how to really USE your feet well will make them look better than they are. Work very hard on tendus, dégagés, frappés, and pas de chevals. Have your teacher show you how to work on these things, and also how to work with a theraband. There are lots and lots of threads in the YD forums about this topic, Jess, so you might want to open up your browser to show all the topics and so some searching. Quote Link to comment
luv2dance515
My teacher told me to improve my arch by in tendus, to really try to work through the foot, or to push up one section at a time <like ball of foot, then full point(e)> and it has really seemed to help my feet. Guest dancer522
Ms. Leigh's really right about it having to do with how you use your foot and articulate it, too. It's funny how many people in my class have naturally better arches than me, but get lazy and don't pointe their feet at all, so my foot ends up looking better! Quote Link to comment
Guest Jess!
hey guys! thanks heaps. Yeah, in class my we do lots of tendus to really work our feet, but I was just interested to see if there was any other ways of imroving it. I'm working hard to improve them Thanks a lot anyway!! Marenetha
I saw a stretch on another website, and I was a little concerned. Is this safe? http://www.dance.net/read.html?postid=2978...plies=39&page=1 Quote Link to comment

spaghetti
People at my studio stretch each other's arches every day. A guest teacher came and taught us how to do it. It's a totally safe way and it feels really good. You simply keep your leg strait out in front of you (turned in) while they gently press Your metatarsils closer to the ground. Be sure to keep your knees straight and tell the stretcher when to stop when you feel to much pressure. It stretches the muscle that runs on top of your arch. Just be sure to stretch your achilles tendons afterwords. Good luck! Quote Link to comment
born2bprima
I have a Chinerina foot strecher that I ordered from Dance Distributors, and I have heard that it would eventually "damage" your achilles tendon....I'm sure too much of it would, but for now it hasn't and I really like using it! I feels really good. Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted March 6, 2005 Administrators Report Share Posted March 6, 2005 Hello spaghetti, welcome to Ballet Talk for Dancers. The problem with that stretch is that one needs to know HOW to do it. One could do a lot of damage by pressing to hard, and also one needs to know that their other hand should be behind the achilles tendon. We don't recommend students stretching each other because we cannot depend on their being taught HOW to stretch each other correctly. Quote Link to comment
Guest Soccerbeamgurl
Yes I definitly agree because once one of my friends stretched my foot and i heard something pop. You could seriously damage your feet if the person doesn't know exactly how to stretch you feet so I definitly do not think it is a good idea. Quote Link to comment
spaghetti
Thank you for the advice. I will be more careful now when stretching feet. We are not harsh when stretching eachothers feet and we do pay attention to what the person is feeling. Quote Link to comment
Guest Soccerbeamgurl
I have a question concerning arches. I have a really really defined arch but the problem is that my achillies (sry bout the spelling) tendon will not release and let my foot get all the way over. I can dance on them but I'm not always all the way over because by tendon just wont go and then it turns white back there because it is so tight. any suggestions? Quote Link to comment
