They are also called supernumeraries or "supers" for short. They are just additional people on the stage to act as set dressing, or to make a crowd scene, what they do is not necessarily dance, but neither is it just plain acting or spear-carrying. But a real "walk-on" is a cameo by a renowned celebrity in a brief character part.
