Basic Movements of Classical Ballet

What are the nine basic movements of dance and what do they mean ??? I've looked through all my syllables and some of my ballet technique books and can't find it any where :)

1. plier - to bend

2. étendre - to stretch

3. glisser - to glide

4. relevé (or elevé) - to rise

5. sauter - to jump

6. tourner - to turn

7. élancer - to dart

8. Piqué - to prick, or jab


There are only 8 basic movements in dance. There are 9 positions of the body:


1. croisé devant

2. à la quatrième devant

3. effacé devant

4. écarté devant

5. à la seconde

6. écarté derrière

7. effacé derrière (épaulé)

8. à la quatrième derrière

9. croisé derrière
