Cathy Posted September 27, 2005 Report Share Posted September 27, 2005 I think anatomically there are some muscles in your back that run length-wise right next to the spine that stretch no matter which way you bend your spine (they are shortest when the spine is upright). The Latin name of those things completely escapes me right now... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Maybe you mean the "erector spinae" muscles? (It's a group of different muscles, that have seperate names, but I forgot.) As the name indicates they keep your spine straight, so I think "un-straightening" your back in any direction would indeed mean stretching them... But I don't know if it's stiffness of these musces that causes LACK of back flexibilty, so I'm not sure stretching them helps for back flexibility. Quote Link to post
