NHBnutcracker
My hips are the tightest things in the world. I can't turnout very well, and I think that this is one of the reasons I don't dance as well as my class mates. I am strong, have high arches, I am en pointe, and I am pretty flexible. Are there any excersizes that are specifically for dancers with imposible hips? Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted November 21, 2005 Administrators Report Share Posted November 21, 2005 NHB, ballet is designed to increase one's rotation, if it is worked correctly over a long period of time. This involves alignment and the knowledge of HOW to work on your rotation. If you have narrow hips, and not much rotation, it will take a long time, and you have to learn to really use what you have very well, while continuing to work on all of the basic barre exercises that develop the rotation. Rond de jambe à terre is the most important exercise for this work. Some extra stretching, after the barre or after your class can help. Also Pilates would be a good addition to your schedule. Guest theskysthelimit
Ms. Leigh, do you have any advice for those of us with loose hips that are really difficult to hold? Thankyou Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted November 22, 2005 Administrators Report Share Posted November 22, 2005 Yes. For those who are very flexible and have good extension, it takes a bit longer to develop the muscle strength to hold the extensions. It's really done just by doing it. I don't generally expect the extensions to be held until the students have finished growing, or at least almost finished. For some that is around 14, others later. Quote Link to comment
Skye90
I think that sounds kind of like me...my legs are very loose to second but can't hold them up there. You say you don't generally expect the extenstions to be held until the student has finished growing, but at what hight are you talking about? Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted November 23, 2005 Administrators Report Share Posted November 23, 2005 At ones maximum extension. However, I don't really expect a long hold in extension from anyone under 13 or 14. It increases somewhat gradually, at least as a generality. There are always exceptions. Quote Link to comment
Skye90
Ok, then I have long way to go! Quote Link to comment
Guest theskysthelimit
I'm 15 and still can't hold my extension, but I've grown a lot recently and I'm still at it (4 inches in 9 months....so painful!) Is this why? Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted November 23, 2005 Administrators Report Share Posted November 23, 2005 Yes, probably. Lots of people are still growing at 15 and even 16. Quote Link to comment
Skye90
I shouldn't really have an excuse because I've never had a big growth spurt! I grow very gradually ( never had growing pains before). I"m just 15, so do you reckon that I might be done now? Quote Link to comment
Administrators Victoria Leigh Posted November 26, 2005 Administrators Report Share Posted November 26, 2005 Don't know, Skye. No way to be sure, sorry. Everyone grows at a different rate, and some finish very early and other keep going slowly, but longer. Quote Link to comment
