Guest quixotickvinne
Hi there My name is Beth, I'm 18 years old and I am thinking of becoming a dancer. I have always had an very great interest in ballet, but having never been to a public school and having most of my free time spent with college preparations, I haven't had a chance to take any classes of any sort. I would like to in the very near future, however, but even though I think I have the correct body type (5'5", slim) I am pretty sure I'm out of shape due a severe lack of time for excersize other than daily activity and I was just wondering if I need to do any sort of pilates or yoga in preparation for any classes I might take. If there are any sort of requirements as far as flexibility and strength in order to begin a career in ballet. Any help anyone would be able to provide would be most appreciated. Thanks so much! Mel Johnson
Hi, Beth, and welcome to Ballet Talk for Dancers. You really don't need anything to begin ballet. Just you and the teacher. Pilates and yoga might be good for you just on general health and fitness principles, though, and so "couldn't hurt!" You write of a "career in ballet". While starting at 18 isn't an absolute bar to going on to a professional performing career, everything has to be in your favor. The body, the teaching, the mindset, all of it. And it means damn hard work! Now, if your idea of career is recreational, and doing the very best with what you've got in say, a civic company, then fine! Link to comment
