Do you think it would be ok to wear a black leotard with a different color trim to an audition that requires a black leotard? Or would it be better to just wear solid black?

If it says black, then I would stick with just black. For other auditions which do not specify, I'm sure the two color one would be fine.

I have begun to seriously audition for professional ballet companies this year. Most of the auditions I will attend will be the big cattle call auditions in NYC as well as a few other auditions that I will travel to and take company class. I have only attended a few so far and have always dressed in a colored leotard with pink tights. I have seen other dancers in a variety of other outfits and was wondering what your thoughts were. Do you think it is okay to wear black tights? I would of course never wear warmers or other junk but I have considered wearing black tights instead of my normal pink. What do you think??? Would some directors think of this as a turn off? Is pink always safer or does it really even matter??? Sorry this might sound stupid but I am just curious!!! Thanks! I am also planning to attend the Washington Ballet audition Ms Leigh...what do you think they would think about black tights??? :)

That was what I had always thought...pink tights are more appropriate!!! I was just suprised at the number of dancers who came to these auditions dressed in unitards, black tights, tights rolled up, pink tights over their leotards or even wearing skirts. I always stuck to my pink tights but just wondered what others thought! Thanks!!!

I have a question along these same lines... What are your thoughts on wearing short skirts for center work for a professional ballet company audition? Is that appropriate or not? I have heard mixed advice from various people and wanted to know Ms. Leigh and Mjr. Johnson's opinions.

Short skirts aren't a problem, as long as they don't obscure the hipline to an unrecognizable extent. What I don't like is having somebody show up as if they're going for a little walk in Antarctica, and shed layers as the class progresses. Grunge is so last decade!

And if you are going to wear a skirt, make sure it is around your WAIST, and not your HIPS! When they hang from the hips they just lengthen the torso and shorten the legs. Not attractive :)

Thank you for the replies. I'm surprised that anyone would show up at audition with layers of warmups on- I would never think of doing that. And I agree with you Ms. Leigh- I've never understood why some people insist on wearing their skirts hanging off their hips. It definitely does not complement any body type. Thanks again.

What should I wear for a dance audition that's not ballet? It's for the dance part of an audition for musical theatre. Part of the audition will be ballet. I also have to send them a picture of me in dance clothes. Will a picture of me in ballet class wearing a black leotard, pink tights and pointe shoe be ok, or should it be a picture in jazz clothes? I thought ballet would be better because the clothes show more of the body line.

There can be some variables at work here. What's it for, a show? A course? Other?

OK, your instincts are perfect, in my book. If I were looking for a musical theater dancer for a college, I'd want one who could show me that s/he had a strong foundation in a technical type of dance, and it don't get more technical than ballet!:) For a workshop, or a single-shot show, or even a stock company, the photos would be different.

And what do you think about an oufit for the audition?
