Skittl1321
Pointe class is finally going well for me! I've been working on doing a pique turn prep for almost a month. My bottom just doesn't want to travel with my leg. But this weekend I finally got it. I earned a compliment from my teacher. After class I also was complimented by a student. Her words, as I remember them "I just wanted to let you know that you are looking so good in class. You don't look scared to death anymore." Not quite the same as "Your 164 fouttes were amazing!" but I'll take it (On my left foot I am still scared, but I have been working really hard on not showing in my face when I mess up. I tend to wince in class) On the bad side- I did something to my right foot that is making it really hurt when I point it. And it is a bit swollen near my ankle. I don't have class until Thursday, and pointe is Saturday- so that should give it enough time to get better. Quote Link to comment
thekboose
"I have been working really hard on not showing in my face when I mess up. I tend to wince in class" I know exactly what you mean - that's my problem too. For me, it doesn't matter whether I mess up or not, I constantly wear all of the stress in my face (grimace, bit my lip, etc.) I'm constantly being told to "smile" or put all of the stress from my face/upper body into my core. Anyway - Congrats on the pique en pointe! And here's hoping your ankle is better. -K Quote Link to comment
thedancingj
Not looking "scared to death" is a GREAT development, actually!! Mind over matter!! Once you start relaxing into steps, or at least convincing yourself that you're relaxed, things become so much easier. I will admit that I've been dancing on pointe for a good 8 or 9 years now, and whenever I take time off I still need a day to get over my "fear factor" in pirouettes all over again. Practice, practice, practice. Once you've convinced yourself that nothing disasterous is going to happen (you're not going to fall down and break both your legs and leave in a stretcher while everyone laughs at you), THEN your mind is free to figure out what needs to happen! Laschwen
I guess the scared face isn't so strange after all.... I was told I looked terrified during a string of chaine turns during a beginners master class way back in college by one of the teaching assistants. Of course I knew I was terrified of going off course and crashing into someone, or tipping over, but I didn't know it showed at the time. The TA was amused. Laschwen. Quote Link to comment
thedancingj
The funny thing about turning is that when you're turning your head that fast, you feel like no one can see the expression on your face, but really they can! I remember waaay back in the day when my mom was observing my ballet classes, she noticed that all the girls in the class got these funny looks on their faces during chaines because they thought no one could see them! I wasn't turning though. Just doing pique retire across the room. I'm not as scared when I turn as when I balance. Quote Link to comment
onyx
That's just the opposite of me - I am terrifed to turn but not balance. That was a funny compliment, but a good one! I remember one I got once a long time ago- I had just finished a petit allegro combination, and my teacher ( the company director) said , "Janice, that was ....not too bad."! Quote Link to comment
